Welcome Back Students 2014 - 2015! Dear Marist Student-Athletes, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both our upperclassmen and freshmen to Marist for the 2014-2015 academic year! We are excited to begin what will surely be another record-setting year, both academically and athletically. In 2013-2014, our student-athletes had an amazing year in the classroom! Here are some of the highlights: 13 consecutive year leading MAAC in student-athletes named to Academic Honor Roll. 235 student-athletes named to 2014 MAAC Academic Honor Roll. 5 student-athletes named to the CoSIDA / Capital One Academic All-District ® Teams. Caylin Moore '16 (Football) was the first Marist undergraduate to be awarded a US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes scholarship to the University of Bristol. 56 student-athletes honored at CSAE’s 1st ever Scholar Student-Athlete Brunch. MAAC Pepsi Goodworks Challenge winner for the second year in a row! We are so proud of all of your achievements! Keep up the good work! This Summer has also been a time of exciting new changes. We said farewell to Dasha Chersokov and Cammie Jones. While it is sad to say good-bye, we wish them well in their new positions. We also welcomed two new wonderful additions to the Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement in August, Assistant Director, Ali Kaptein and Academic Fellow, Zach Ahmed. We encourage all of you to use the Center for SA Enhancement to study or meet with a tutor, to talk to one of us about your plans after college, or to learn more about community service or other programming we offer. Keep an eye on your e-mail, our Facebook, and Twitter pages for information on upcoming programs that will cater to ALL of our student-athletes! We look forward to another great year and hope that your success in the classroom mirrors your success on the field, court, course, track, river, and in the pool! We look forward to working with you this year and wish you the best of luck in your academic and athletic pursuits. Sincerely, Alyssa M. Gates Alyssa M. Gates Director of Student-Athlete Enhancement Ali was born and raised in Vernon, NJ, but spent the last five years working in Los Angeles, California. She is very excited to be back home on the east coast so she can spend more time with her family. In her free time, Ali enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, running, swimming – anything in the sun! What she likes about working in the office is getting to know the student-athletes and seeing them succeed - personally and athletically. Zacharia, better known as Zach, was born and raised in East Windsor, NJ and is currently living in Poughkeepsie, NY. Zach is a huge sports fan and competed as a Division I Track and Field athlete when he was in college. On his down time Zach enjoys working out and getting involved in any type of athletic competition or adventure sports. What Zach likes most about working at Marist College is the Athletic community and having the opportunity to grow with the student athletes towards success. Athletes in Action ! Student Athlete Day ’14 - A thank you event to our student athletes for all of the time and energy they have dedicated to their sport. The rain didn’t stop us from having a great time on Wednesday, April 30th. A last minute change from an outdoor BBQ to indoors in the grey gym didn’t damper anyone’s spirits. Everyone enjoyed the subs, chips, candy, drinks and ice cream. The DJ and Karaoke made the event a fun and memorable celebration! Pre-Freshmen Basketball Players - The incoming freshmen basketball players come to Marist for a 6 week summer program to help them prepare for life as a college student-athlete. The five men and three women earned 6 core credits and participated in community service events at Locust Grove and the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie. US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute Student-athlete Caylin Moore, QB on the football team, was the recipient of the Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship. He studied transatlantic slave trade at the University of Bristol, in the UK. NCAA Career in Sports Forum - Two Marist student-athletes - senior Michelle Gaye (Greenlawn, N.Y.) of women's cross country and track and field and senior Tourron Whitfield (Valley Stream, N.Y.) from men’s basketball - attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum weekend on June 5-8, at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis. MAAC Pepsi Goodworks Challenge - Marist College Athletics was the winner for the second year in a row! Our student-athletes and coaches submitted 65 community service activities and earned 7,745.5 points. Second place was Canisius College in Buffalo, NY with 47 events and 5525.0 points. We won by 18 events and 2220.5 points, Go Red Foxes! The challenge took place during the 2013 2014 academic year, ending on April 30, 2014. Volunteers consisted of student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administrators. A point system, which takes into account the number of volunteers, hours worked, and video submissions, were calculated to determine the winner.
