Sincerely, Student-Athlete Enhancement Staff How to Study for Final Exams in College Identify the Type of Exam - Some professors will give you an essay exam at the end of the semester. Just think of it – tons and tons of information crammed into a three-hour essay. Sounds fabulous, doesn't it? Some teachers stick strictly to short answer questions, while others will give you a multiple-choice exam or a combination of sorts. I've known profs who have allowed notes, while others have not. It's imperative that you find out the type of exam you'll be receiving and whether or not you'll be able to use your notes. Multiplechoice final exams are a whole different ball of wax than essay final exams, and as such, must be studied for in quite a different way! Ask, if your teacher isn't forthcoming . Divide and Conquer - How do you manage to learn it all? Divvy up the material you have to learn according to the number of days prior to the day before the test. (You need an overall review day before the final). Then, divide the material accordingly. If you have fourteen days before the exam, and you want to start studying, then chop the semester into fourteen equal parts and study a section on each day. That way, you won't get overwhelmed with the enormity of the task. Schedule Time - It's important to find the time to do it! You're busy – I get that. You have work, and classes, and extracurriculars and sports and fitness and yadda yadda yadda. You must carve out an hour or so a day to fit studying into your schedule. It will not present itself – you'll have to sacrifice some things to get it done. Study with a group only if it makes sense - Many students believe (mistakenly) that a study group always affords an advantage: more brain power plus peer pressure to crack the books. This works well when your study buddies are at least as smart as you. Exam time isn't charity time. Group or solo, figure out what works for you and don’t waste your time. At this stage of the game, professors assume you know what you're doing. Make sure that you do! Review Session - Yes Please! - More than likely, your professor will host a review session before the final exam. By all means, attend the darn thing. If you fail to go to this class, then you're really in big trouble! This is "How to study for final exams" 101! In it, you'll learn things like the type of exam it is, what kind of information you'll be expected to showcase, and if it's an essay exam, you'll probably get a selection of topics you may see on test day. Whatever you do, don't miss it! Excerpts reprinted from http://testprep.about.com/od/How_To_Study/tp/Study_Finals_College.htm Red Foxes in Action Thank you to Alex Cunningham (Men’s Track) for doing such a great job organizing the StudentAthlete Hunger Drive Campaign. Over 180 items were donated! Thank you to men and women’s cross country and track, women’s basketball, women’s crew, and football for making the drive such a success. Student-Athletes “Enhanced their Chance” for career success by attending the resume workshop event offered on November 17. Employers from W.B. Mason, Target, Northwest Mutual and a graduate school advisor offered resume, interview, and career advise. Each student-athlete was able to get a one on one counseling session to succeed in qualifying for that desired post-graduation job. Hosted by the Middle Main Initiative, a program that is part of Hudson River Housing, team members from Men’s Crew and Women’s Soccer participated in “Collect and Clean Up Main Street” on November 15th in Poughkeepsie. Center for Student - Athlete Enhancement Student-Athlete of the Month Alex Cunningham MAJOR: Athletic Training POSITION: Sprints/Hurdles YEAR: Junior HOMETOWN: Poughkeepsie, NY Going above and beyond is something Alex does naturally. You don’t need to ask Alex to step up, he is already doing it. Seeing a need and a way to help, Alex came to the CSAE asking if he could organize a student-athlete food drive to help the Campus Ministry hunger awareness campaign. Alex checked each day to see how the drive was going. When donations were slow, Alex went door to door and solicited cans from teammates and over 180 cans were donated. Alex’s comment on the last day, “If I had more time, I could have gotten more”. That “can-do” attitude is also apparent on the track. Alex is the school record holder in the 110-meter high hurdles. Coach Pete Colaizzo says “Alex excels and exceeds at events that are extremely difficult to master given our lack of on-campus track facilities. He works hard at the sport, year round, and is passionate about improving in every aspect of track and field. In addition, Alex has taken on a leadership role with our team both on and off the track, and he has matured greatly over the past few years. We look forward to great things over the next two years with Alex.” Alex is an All-MAAC performer (indoor and outdoor track) - high hurdles and 4x100 meter relay. As an athletic training major, Alex is already putting his skills to good use. A volunteer for the NYC marathon in 2014, he provided emergency care and recorded medical information for the participants. Alex is the track & field representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a participant in the Emerging Leaders Program, and a volunteer with Special Olympics. When his objective in life is “to make a difference”, Alex is on track to succeed. Alyssa Gates Alyssa.Gates@marist.edu Ali Kaptein Asst. Director - ext. 6302 Alicia.Kaptein@marist.edu Erin is all about making the most of her years here at Marist College and she has hit the ground running. As an incoming freshman Erin Gisolfi said of joining the crew team, “I think it’s going to make my four years of college all the better.” “I want to join intramurals,” said Gisolfi later, “I want to go to the basketball games.” Erin wants to do it all and she is well on her way. Erin is an active participant in programs offered by CSAE. As a freshman, she is already attending resume workshops, leadership events offered by LEAP, and is networking with business professionals. A double major in criminal justice and business administration with a concentration in international business, she is “enhancing her chance” to secure her business law related career. Erin currently works part time in the Office of Human Resources at Marist College and serves as one of the varsity coxswains for women’s crew. Michelle Stathers, assistant women’s crew coach says “"The coxswain is an extension of the coach in the boat, a true leader off and on the water, and Erin has taken on these qualities already as a freshman on the team." Success doesn’t just happen, it is created and Erin is well on her way to a bright future. Important Dates Need Help? Contact Staff Below!
