Student-Athletes of the Month
Zachary Quarles - Senior - Football
Position: Corner Back
Major: Political Science
Hometown: Upper Marlboro, MD
Zach is a standout both on and off the field. Coach Rumsey says, “Zach is an incredibly focused and
driven young man. He is very active in campus organizations such as SAAC, and has done some
impressive internships preparing himself for life after Marist.”
Zach leads by example, setting a very high bar for those trying to follow. Team captain for the 2015
season, Zach has started the season strong. He has had 10 tackles (7 solo), one interception against
Sacred Heart and a team high 8 tackles against Jacksonville.
Off the field, Zach’s leadership qualities shine through on campus and in the classroom. Zach is Co-President of SAAC, the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee, Vice President of the Athletic Affairs in SGA, Student Booster Club SGA liaison, and a member of the
Red Code Committee and Player’s Leadership council. He has been named Honorable Mention All-PFL and to the PFL Academic
Honor Roll each of the last two seasons. Zach has been selected to join the 15-16 Booz Allen University Scholars Program and is a
national nominee for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team®. His community service
includes the Special Olympics, White Ribbon Campaign, Hunger Walk, Bonnie’s Boxes, and The Giving Tree.
Preparing for a career after Marist, Zach was a investigative intern with the Dutchess County Public Defender’s Office and a Business
Consultant intern this summer at Robbins Gioia, a management consulting firm in Alexandria, VA. Zach has worked hard for all of his
successes and we wish him an amazing future.
Molly Shamieh - Junior - Water Polo
Position: Center
Major: Biomedical Sciences
Hometown: Sylmar, CA
Ability is what you are capable of doing and attitude determines how well you do it. Molly’s
“can do” attitude allows her to succeed in the pool and at Marist College.
Appearing in 11 games for the Red Foxes in her sophomore season, Molly led the water
polo team with a .619 shooting percentage. She finished 2015 with 13 goals and one assist;
Molly had five-goal games against Cal Tech and Saint Francis Brooklyn.
Coach Benson says, “Molly is a very hard working individual who does not stand for when people tell her that she can't
do something. She has overcome so much adversity, and brings a lot of personality and work ethic to our team.”
Out of the pool, Molly is a Resident Advisor in Marist College housing, a Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement Peer
Mentor, an executive board member of L.E.A.P. (Ladies Empowering Athletes Program) council, and a participant in the
annual Girl Scout Sports Sampler. She can also be heard weekly on Marist College Radio (WMAR) as a co-host of a
music show featuring various artists work while involving listener interaction and discussions on a wide variety of topics.
With her “can do” attitude, there is nothing that Molly can’t achieve. We look forward to tracking her success on the
Water Polo team and at Marist College.
Finding our
Foxes:
Where are
they now?
When Steve Guarino first arrived on Marist Campus in the fall of 2008, he
was feeling a lot of emotions, but fear wasn’t one of them. “I came into college with
two of my best friends from high school that played on my football team, Ryan
Dinnebeil, and Kesnel Menard.” After earning a travel spot as a freshman, Guarino’s
future at Marist seemed bright. “Coming from a prestigious high school like St. Joe’s
of Montvale, NJ, I felt that they had done everything to prepare me for college on and
off the field.”
What Guarino’s high school did not prepare him for was the constant
distractions and temptations that college campuses offer. “I didn’t foresee the
freedoms and temptations that came with living on your own as a DI football player,
and that’s where my problems began.” Guarino, like every other college freshman,
had a hard time adjusting to life on his own. Some deal with it better than others, and
Steve admits that he dealt with it in the worst way possible. “I was sleeping through
classes, partaking in negative activities that affected my body, and I found myself
straying away from my goals and ambitions that I set when I first came into college.”

Road to the
Top!

After battling personal demons his sophomore year and heading down a dark
path, Steve was forced to leave school for a year in order to get the help he needed
to change his life. Even Guarino admits that once he left Marist, he never believed he
would return. But there was one person who believed in Steve just like she believes
in every single athlete that walks through her door; Alyssa Gates. “The way my life
was going, I never thought that I would ever be at Marist again. Nobody believed in
me, nobody except Alyssa. Alyssa not only played a huge role in my development as
a student, but also reshaped my morals, values and priorities, and showed me the
bigger picture in life, something that nobody could get through to me at that point in
my life.” Steve returned to Marist and finished out his career, playing in every game
his 5th year.
Following his 5th year, Guarino received the Wilma Rudolph National Student
Athlete Achievement Award, a nationally given award to honor student athletes who
have overcome great personal, academic, and/or emotional odds to achieve
academic success while participating in intercollegiate athletics.
Today Steve is excelling at one of the largest banks in the world, Bank of
New York Mellon. He works in foreign currencies & exchange and in just a short time,
he has already received two awards from the company detailing his hard work and
excellence. In December of 2014, he received the “Outperformance Award” which is
given to an employee for demonstrating outstanding performance in one or more
areas, taking responsibility for out-of-the-ordinary tasks and providing innovative
solutions for client needs or internal processes. In March of 2015 he received the
“Take A Bow Award” which specifically acknowledges an employee for helping clients
succeed and received for providing calculations to several clients on a daily basis
before negotiating collateral terms.
Steve Guarino is a prime example of the old saying, “If you fall 7 times, you
get up 8.” It would have been very easy for him to quit football after going down a
dark path, but rather than quit, he perservered through it and he credits Alyssa Gates
of our very own Student Enhancement Center with helping him get where he is today.
“Alyssa was the only one who got through to me and got me to see the bigger
picture. If it wasn’t for her I don’t know where I would be today.”
