Pumpkin Walk
Thank you to all the student-athletes who showed their artistic talent to paint and
carve beautiful pumpkins for the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie’s Annual
Pumpkin Walk. The pumpkins lined a nature trail that visitors walked through
guided by the children. The celebration continued in the gym with entertainment,
refreshments, and games.

Student-Athletes of the Month
Joseph Radin - Senior - Lacrosse
Position: Attack
Major: Business Administration - Finance
Hometown: Long Beach, NY
Only special players on the Marist Men’s Lacrosse team get to wear #34 and Joe Radin certainly
qualifies as one. The recipient of the #34 jersey is a player who best represents the outstanding
characteristics of former Marist Lacrosse player Eddie Coombs, who tragically passed away in 2011.
Marist honors Eddie each season to keep his legacy alive and Joe will have no problem living up to
the expectations.
Joe was named 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year after starting all 14 games and ranking in the
conference’s top 10 in points and assists per game. An All-MAAC First Team selection in 2014 and
2015, Joe was the only junior captain on the squad in 2015. He ended the season ranked 9th in the nation in goals and 20th in points
per game. He was named to the 2015 MAAC All-Tournament Team and was the 2015 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Joe has
been named a senior team captain for the 2016 season.
Joe also gives back to his community. He has volunteered at the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, The Eddie Coombs Fall Ball
Shoot Out, the Wellness Fair clean-up, freshmen move-in day, and various youth clinics to develop shooting, passing and other
lacrosse techniques. Joe will graduate in May with a degree in Business: Finance. This summer he interned with Ladenburg
Thalmann, an investment banking firm in New York City to prepare for life after Marist.
We are excited for Spring 2016 to see what Joe can accomplish in his senior year, both on and off the lacrosse field!
Callie Morlock - Junior - Tennis
Position: Singles/Doubles
Major: Biomedical Sciences
Hometown: Golden, CO
Coach Justin Satkowski says, “It's been a pleasure getting to know Callie this fall during my
first few months on campus. She's an incredibly hard worker both on and off the court and
she's always smiling. Her positive attitude and work ethic make her a terrific example of a
Marist student-athlete and will carry her far in her future pursuits."
On the tennis court, Callie recorded a 5-4 record in her last 10 matches last season before
earning a spot on the MAAC All-Academic Team. She picked up a 6-1 win from the third
doubles position in Marist’s 7-0 win over Rider to open MAAC play in the 2015-2016 season.
Besides playing tennis, Callie is very involved with student activities on and off campus. She is a member of LEAP, a peer
mentor to a freshmen student-athlete, treasurer of the Asian Alliance, a volunteer at Project Cure (a nonprofit dedicated to
redistributing medical equipment to countries in need), a member of Delta Epsilon Mu (a pre-health fraternity), and
contributed to the Children’s Home Annual Pumpkin Walk.
A biomedical science major, Callie hopes to work in a clinical health care environment after Marist and has been actively
pursuing her career by gaining valuable experience at the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. We have no doubt Callie will
have tremendous success in the her time at Marist and in her future career.

Madelyn
Walters
Five years ago Maddie Walters was a three sport athlete at Nauset Regional High School in
Eastham, Massachusetts preparing to attend the University of Connecticut on a rowing
scholarship. In just five years she has traveled coast to coast, accomplishing and persevering
through numerous challenges to get to where she is today. Although she credits hard work
and patience as factors to her success, she also attributes luck and timing as key elements to
why and how she got to Marist College.
After attending Connecticut for a year and a half, she decided to transfer to the University of
Southern California. “I loved the weather in California, and I felt like I had found my home away
from home.” Although Walters felt at home rowing for USC, it was her issues with the transfer
process that presented challenges for her when she first arrived on campus.
“I had a really hard time with the advisors at USC, most of my credits did not transfer to USC
from UCONN, and I was given misinformation regarding a class I had already taken and was
told I needed to take it again at USC! Halfway through the semester I was told that the original
credit from UCONN would count, so I spent half a semester in a class I had already taken.”
It was at this point that Walters admits to feeling “overwhelmed and stressed out” in her new
environment. “I began to wonder if I had made the correct decision to come to the west coast.”
Then in her junior year, almost as if someone from above heard Maddie’s prayers, she was
introduced to her new advisor, Ali Kaptein. Ali helped Maddie plan for graduate school and
focus her energy on something she loved rather than the medical path she was on. “I always
knew that I wanted to stay close to athletics after I was finished playing. I just didn’t know
where in athletics I wanted to work.”
After graduating from USC in 2014, Maddie decided to pursue a one year intensive Masters in
Education Program at the University of Washington. “Ali really helped me narrow my options
down, and we both felt that the University of Washington was the best place for me.” Ali not
only helped Maddie get her feet under herself at USC, but according to Walters, “Ali was one
of the reasons I decided to pursue a career in athletics and education. I had such a hard time
adjusting and feeling included at USC when I first got there because of my advisor situation. I
never wanted another student to feel the way that I did in those first few months at USC.”

While at the University of Washington, Maddie worked for the Sports Operations unit of the
Athletic Department. “Working there really gave me an opportunity to fall in love with the
athletic department as a whole. After working at UW I knew that I wanted my career to stay
close to athletics and education.”
After receiving her Masters from the University of Washington in June, she immediately took a
position on the U.S. National Team Rowing Staff, in Princeton, New Jersey. “Although I
enjoyed working for the National Rowing Team over the summer, I knew it wasn’t a permanent
home. I began to compose emails to various colleges around the northeast in hopes of
securing a job in their academic/athletic departments.” Marist was one of the colleges Maddie
applied to, but didn’t put much thought into who worked there until she did a little research on
the college. “Marist was one of my choices to work, but not because Ali was working there. I
had no idea until I looked on Marist’s website and saw her picture; I was shocked.”
After Maddie saw that her former college advisor held a position in the Center for Student
Athlete Enhancement at Marist, she immediately wanted to work there and reconnect with the
woman who helped her find her way a few years back. “I contacted Ali to see if they were still
conducting interviews; she must have put in a good word, and I could not be happier.”
Many people don’t believe in coincidences, but the chances of Maddie and Ali’s situation
occurring in reality are slim to none. Both women are from the east coast, and met on the west
coast as an advisor and student athlete. Five years later both women are co-workers here at
Marist, a place where both women feel at home. “I never in a million years pictured my life to
be where it is today. I am just thankful that I am in an environment where I can contribute to the
education and growth of student athletes, while also being surrounded by an excellent staff
and college.”
