CSAE Center for StudentAthlete Enhancement February 2016 Marist College Welcome Back Student-Athletes! Welcome back to Marist College! It’s a cold start to the spring semester in Poughkeepsie but it’s nice and warm in the Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement. We hope everyone enjoyed their winter break and is now ready for an outstanding spring semester. We look forward to seeing a semester full of accomplishments and celebrations! Here’s to a great Spring 2016! Get Inspired! Marist College welcomes Dr. Derek Greenfield to campus to speak to our student-athletes about cultural diversity during the activity period on February 10th in the Nelly Goletti Theatre. The topic is “Confronting Ourselves: Promoting Diversity, Cultural Competence, and Inclusive Excellence.” All student-athletes with remaining eligibility will be required to attend. Your coach will provide your team’s assigned time slot. “Passionate and alive! One of the most admirable qualities about Derek is that he indeed “walks the talk” on multiculturalism and social justice. He has a wonderful way of making his audiences reflect upon themselves and the changes they are capable of — all with humor and wit.” Kayleen Oka, Seattle Central Community College Peer Mentor End of Year Event The student-athlete peer mentors and mentees met at the end of the fall semester for a little fun before final exams. The team helped with freshman move-in, set-up and cleaned-up the Wellness Fair, decorated pumpkins for the Children's Home, participated in the Make the World Purple Walk and the Hunger Walk, and donated a gift for the Giving Tree. Additionally, men's lacrosse earned team enhancement points by participating in the Escalation Workshop developed by the One Love Foundation to educate campus communities about relationship violence. Finally, the team attended numerous sporting events throughout the fall to show support for their fellow Red Foxes. Women's Lacrosse finished the semester with 3033 Red Fox Challenge points, beating out women's rowing by just 9 points! Members of the team participated in a variety of community service events including freshman move-in day, Make the World Purple Walk, Anti-Hazing Walk, Hunger Walk, Hunger Meal, and the Giving Tree. He is performing at an unbelievably high level and is certainly one of the better players in the MAAC. More importantly, he has become our team leader and the guy his younger teammates look to for strength. It is rewarding to see how far he has come and we are excited to see what he has in store for us in the future.” On the court, Khallid’s stats are outstanding and the season is not over yet. As of January 18, he has led the MAAC in points (22.8), minutes (37.8) and made three-pointers per game (3.1). Khallid is fifth nationally in minutes per game and eighth in the country in scoring. He entered the top 20 on Marist's all-time scoring list. Khallid had his 1,000th career point in a home contest against Canisius on Jan. 2. This season, he has 10 games with at least 20 points and three with at least 30. Khallid was the MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2013-2014. Khallid represented the U.S. Virgin Islands at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in June. He also worked as a mentor in the CSAE to the incoming freshmen basketball players. With nearly half of the men’s team being freshmen, Khallid leads by example to make the team closer and more tight knit. Giving back to the community, Khallid has volunteered at the Veterans Hospital, The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, Locust Grove, The Food Bank of the HV, Special Olympics and Kids Day Out. Academically, Khallid earned his highest GPA this past fall and has made continuous strides in the classroom as a psychology major. We wish Khallid continued success at Marist College and look forward to seeing his accomplishments in his final season. Meredith Wurtz - Junior - Swimming Position: Sprinter Major: Psychology Hometown: Lafayette Hill, PA Balancing academics, swim practice and swim meets is not an easy task. Yet Meredith is making it all happen. Meredith has even taken it up a notch and was accepted into the highly competitive Five-Year BA/MA in Educational Psychology Program. She will receive a BA in Psychology and a MA in Educational Psychology in five years. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team in 2015. In the pool, Meredith is more determined than ever. Coach Larry VanWagner says, "Meredith displays the self-discipline, self-motivation and self-introspection required of a winner". Named the MAAC Swimmer of the Week on January 20th, Meredith was a member of a first place relay squad and took the top spot in two individual events during Marist’s win over Boston College on Jan. 16. She swam the 50-yard freestyle in 24.55 seconds and clocked in at 53.06 seconds in the 100 yards. She also anchored the Red Foxes’ first place 200-yard relay squad. After the dual meet, Meredith owned the top times in the MAAC in the 50-yard (23.91) and 100-yard (52.32) freestyle and was the second fastest in the 200-yard freestyle (1.55.36). When not in the classroom or pool, Meredith still finds time to give back to the community. Meredith is Student-Athlete Peer Mentor, a representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and has participated in the Girl Scout Sports Sampler and Special Olympics Games held at Marist. In the summer, Meredith is back in the water as a swim and water polo coach. We wish Meredith good luck in the Five-Year BA/MA program. We have no doubt that she will succeed in all her future endeavors. 3 Important Dates Contact Us Need help? February 1 - Last day to register for elective credit internships.
