Haviland Sportsmanship Day
More than 80 student-athletes volunteered their time to discuss sportsmanship
and college athletics with the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Haviland Middle
School in Hyde Park as they commemorated National Sportsmanship Week.
They fielded questions on topics ranging from sportsmanship to college life and
academics during the two-day program.
Thank you to Dr. Derek
Greenfield for the
incredible and thought
provoking lectures on
cultural diversity! You
opened up our hearts and
minds and made an impact
on everyone who attended.

Stay in to Win
For 5 weeks, members of the Men’s Basketball team are participating in the
Stay in to Win program run by Family Services’ Teen Resource Activity Center
(T.R.A.C.) in Poughkeepsie. Stay in to Win uses the game of basketball to
communicate the importance of staying in school and succeeding by
graduating. The program is designed to help teens make better personal,
academic, and career decisions.

Special Olympics
Beautiful Me
Members of Women’s Lacrosse and Volleyball attended the
“Beautiful Me” workshop on campus. Beautiful Me is a self-esteem
program designed to educate females by promoting appreciation for
their genuine qualities, accurate self awareness, and the
satisfaction of helping others.
Nothing feels better than to have a crowd
cheering you on. That’s what members
of the Women’s Rowing team did for the
Special Olympic Athletes participating in
the New York State Winter Games held
in the Hudson Valley Region on Feb 1920.
Here they are at the opening
ceremony showing their support!

Student-Athletes of the Month
Abigail Witczak - Junior - Lacrosse
Position: Goalkeeper
Major: Communication
Hometown: Mendham, NJ
Dedication and hard work are paying off for Abby, on and off the field. Abby broke the program
record for career wins in the 2016 regular season opener, picking up her 23 rd, in a 15-12 win vs.
Sacred Heart on Feb. 15. She made 13 saves and had 5 ground balls (both career highs) to
preserve the victory. In 2015, Abby started all 17 games, making 112 saves. She was MAAC
Rookie of the year in 2014.
Coach O’Brien says, "As a goalie, Abby has been one of the most talented and consistent players
for our program. She not only brings her focus every practice, but she takes her goalie job to the
next level by doing extra between practices. She finds the time to put in extra work with more shots and watching more film. Her
work ethic and attitude is what separates her from others and, in my opinion, is why she finds success on the field. She also
expresses an impressive sense of confidence during game days, which I know comes from knowing our opponents and trusting our
defense."
Off the field, Abby was selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team, Marist Emerging Leaders, National Society of Leadership and
Success, and she represented Marist Athletics at the MAAC SAAC conference in the Fall of 2015. Giving back to the community,
Abby has volunteered at the Haviland Sportsmanship Day, Pine Bush Lacrosse Youth Clinic and at Friends of Jaclyn events.
We are Red Fox proud to have Abby at Marist College!
Kyle Mikesh - Senior - Rowing
Position: 7 seat and bow seat
Major: International Business
Hometown: Westport, CT
Being a team captain is a great honor that comes with a great responsibility. It is given to an
athlete that the rest of the team respects and trusts to lead them in the right direction. Men’s
rowing could not have picked a better man to lead this young team. In his Junior year, Kyle was in
the First Varsity 8 boat that took 2nd place at the President’s Cup, 2nd place at the MAAC
Championship, and 3rd place at the NY State Collegiate Championship.
Coach Sanford says, “Kyle has been an extremely hard worker throughout his rowing career at
Marist. He is a reliable team member and his work ethic is recognized by the coaches and his teammates who elected him as
their captain at the end of the fall season. As the only senior on the men's team, he has done a great job welcoming a deep class
of talented freshmen to the varsity team and realizes that he must lead by example. The success of his senior season will
depend on their continued development along with the motivated sophomores and juniors.”
When not on the water, Kyle has volunteered at the Haviland Sportsmanship Day, Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, Marist
Relay for Life, and Special Olympics. Kyle studied abroad in the Fall of 2014 in Reutlingen, Germany and he is also a member
of the Marist International Club. He was selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team his sophomore and junior year.
We wish Kyle good luck in his senior year leading the rowing team and in all his future endeavors.
