School Breakfast Meal Pattern for SY 2014-2015 Overview • Age/grade groups began in 2013/2014 • Calorie limits began in 2013/2014 • New meal requirements in SY 2014/15 – Meal pattern overview & timeline • Fruits • Grains • Sodium • OVS • Miscellaneous SBP Changes Effective SY 2014-2015 • 1 cup of fruit must be offered daily at all grade levels • Students must take ½ cup of fruit • All grains must be whole grain-rich • Target 1 for sodium begins Review - Components vs Items • A food component is one of three food groups that comprise reimbursable breakfasts. – Grain (with optional meat/meat alternate allowed) – Fruit/vegetable – Milk • A food item is a specific food offered within the three food components – Whole wheat toast – Fat-free chocolate milk Must offer at least four food items SBP Required Components • Breakfast consists of 3 components from three food groups: 1. milk 2. fruit/juice/vegetable 3. grains • meat/meat alternate (optional) SBP Meal Pattern Requirements • Must serve a minimum of 4 items containing the 3 components 1. Grain 2. Fruit/Vegetable 3. Milk 4. Additional Item • The food items selected may be from any of the required components, as long as ½ cup fruit/juice/allowable vegetable is selected.
