Instructor demonstrates how to use a graphic organizer to locate key words in a text or creates a word wall and posts key words in a text. 2. Instructor demonstrates and explains how to use the key words to find and summarize the main idea of the text (GIST strategy). 3. With the instructor facilitating, students work in small groups or pairs with the same text and use a graphic organizer to determine the main idea and summarize the text. 4. Students work individually and select a text from a variety of sources, locate key words, and summarize the text. 5. Instructor uses summary created in activity #2 above and adds opinion words to the summary. 6. Students identify opinion words and discuss how the summary has changed and whether the summary is still accurate.
