Sample Student Learning Goals for the Arts!
The WVDE Educator Evaluation site now has Sample Student Learning Goals for each of the
arts disciplines (Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts). As we continue to think about how to
articulate baseline data, goals, strategies and measures, we hope the samples will be a useful

Arts Alive 2015!
All Arts Alive Submission Guidelines will be posted this Friday, October 3rd. A separate
LISTSERV update dedicated to the Guidelines and important Arts Alive information will be sent
on Friday and will also be available on the Arts Alive web page http://wvde.state.wv.us/artsalive/
Remember: There is no longer a requirement or pre-requisite that teachers must belong to
their professional organization to submit work for consideration. Any arts teacher (Pre-K-12;
Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts) can submit work for consideration in Arts Alive.
Start planning now! Arts Alive 2015 will be Friday, April 3rd at the Clay Center in Charleston,
WV. Some performances and exhibited art work in Arts Alive 2015 may still be selected from
professional conferences, festivals and/or exhibits. However, every arts discipline (Dance,
Music, Theatre and Visual Arts) now has an alternative submission process for 2015. It is no
longer a requirement or pre-requisite that teachers must belong to their professional organization
to submit work for consideration. All submission guidelines will be available Friday, October
3rd. Stay tuned for more details as we continue to grow and evolve Arts Alive!
Young Playwrights Festival
September 30 – October 10, 2014
City Theatre Young Playwrights is a comprehensive, dynamic arts education program serving
teachers, students, and the Pittsburgh community. The program fulfills state academic standards,
including Arts and Humanities as well as Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Four major
components make up the Young Playwrights program: the Young Playwrights Contest, Festival,
Teacher Institute, and In-School Workshops. City Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival stages
professional productions of six winning, one-act plays chosen from over 300 Young Playwrights

Phi Beta Mu Band Clinic
The 2014 Phi Beta Mu Clinic will be held at The Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown on
Monday, Nov.10 from nine a.m. till four p.m. Clinicians scheduled include: Lou Casini, former
Band Director of the famed Chester Junior High School program; Brian Plitnik from WVU on
trombone; Randy Brannon, formerly of Edison Junior High on teaching saxophone for the nonsaxophonist BD; Brian Baldauff, of West Liberty University, on teaching mallet percussion; and
Cynthia Anderson, WVU, on oboe. The afternoon (1:30-4:00) will feature Don Wilcox, Emeritus
Director of WVU, on “Getting Beyond The Notes.” To register or for additional information,

Traveling Museum
The WVMHoF’s Traveling Museum is housed in a 28–foot, handicapped accessible trailer.
Inside, students experience the rich variety of West Virginia music through instruments,
memorabilia, historical photographs and documents. The presentation also includes a session
with the WVMHoF’s Interactive Map, a county–by-county, touchscreen map of West Virginia
that includes bios, photos and videos/soundclips of 200 notable musicians from the Mountain
State. On board the Traveling Museum is the WVMHoF’s unique “make your own CD” studio.
The recording studio allows selected students to record a song - and leave with a CD of their

The Charleston Light Opera Guild is thrilled to close out its 65th Anniversary season with a

BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE ARTS
In March 2014, Americans for the Arts (AFTA)AFTA released a report on the arts and creative
industries. Creative Industries: Business & Employment in the Arts uses Dun & Bradstreet
business and employment data to illustrate the scope and importance of both the nonprofit and
for-profit arts industries. These reports can be localized to any state, county, congressional or
legislative district in the country.

Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO)
GEEO is offering the following travel programs for 2015: India/Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bali/Lombok,
Italy, Eastern Europe, Greece, Uzbekistan, Vietnam/Cambodia, Thailand/Laos,
Belize/Guatemala, Morocco (Winter, Spring and Summer) China, Eastern Turkey, Western
Turkey, Zambia/Botswana/Namibia/South Africa, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Peruvian Andes
(Summer and Spring), Peruvian Amazon, and The Galapagos Islands. The registration deadline
is June 1st, but space is limited and many programs will be full well before the deadline. From
now until October 13th, GEEO's spring and summer programs will be discounted an
additional 5%. Educators have the option to earn graduate school credit and professional
development credit while seeing the world. The trips are 8 to 19 days in length and are designed
and discounted to be interesting and affordable for teachers. GEEO provides teachers educational
materials and the structure to help them bring their experiences into the classroom. The trips are
open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators and administrators, as well as retired
educators. Educators are also permitted to bring along a non-educator guest.

Rock In The Classroom
Rock In The Classroom is an ensemble of educators, musicians, and visual artists who promote
the use of music in classroom settings. We regularly share educational music videos on Teacher
Tube, YouTube, and other public video sites. Our songs are suitable for high school, college,
adult learners, and professional organizations. They are also included on various educational and
research based websites. All are copyright friendly if used for educational or noncommercial

Giving Back with Heart
On Thursday, October 9, 2014 Mission West Virginia will hold a benefit auction called “Giving
Back with Heart” that will showcase artwork created and donated by inmates at Mt. Olive
Correctional Complex. Proceeds from the auction will support a scholarship fund created for
youth in foster care and those of incarcerated parents. The auction will be at the Culture Center
in Charleston, WV and starts at 6 p.m. There will be both a silent and live auction, hors
d’oeuvres , a bar provided by Liquid Catering and music by Beth and Alasha. Tickets to the
event can be purchased at the door or at the following site:
