CIP CODES TABLE DEFINITIONS AND CODES FOR DATA ELEMENTS IN THE SBCTC DATA WAREHOUSE 03/15/13 CIP Data Type: text Size: 6 Allow Null: Yes Definition: This is the six digit Classification of Instruction code. See the TBL3 data set CIP-M, or the data warehouse table DW_REF_ENR_CIP for a complete listing of codes. History: In academic year 1996-97, there was a major change in course coding, especially in the basic skills and developmental areas. At that time, the basic skills and developmental CIP codes were split into two groups with new codes. ABE and ESL were split into three codes, one for each of three levels. In academic year 1998-99, new codes for basic skills and ESL were added. The coding structure changes for ABE, ESL, GED, High School Completion, Sheltered Workshop, and Workplace Basics are below. In Summer Quarter 2000-01, the Information Technology CIP codes were dramatically changed to more closely reflect the federal structure. Another revision occurred in 2010-11 to update the CIP listing to the federal 2010 CIP codes. CIP_TITLE Data Type: text Size: 45 Allow Null: Yes Definition: The CIP title in the approved list of CIP codes BASIC_SKILL CAT Data Type: text Size: 5 Allow Null: Yes Definition: This field categorizes the basic skills CIP codes into ABE, ESL, HS, GED, Goals and Other. History: This field includes both the CIP codes prior to 1996-97 and the current codes. This field is set to null in the table if the CIP does not fall into one of these categories. Added to table in November 1999. CIP_ AGGREGATE Data Type: text Size: 6 Allow Null: Yes Definition: CIP Aggregate. The SBCTC uses some CIP codes which are not in the federal listing of assigned codes. To comply with federal reporting requirements, all codes which are unique to Washington are “aggregated” to a code on the federal list. This is generally not useable for ad hoc analysis. CIP_ DISCIPLINE (Do not use) Data Type: text Size: 2 Allow Null: Yes Definition: CIP Discipline. Do not use. This is a coding structure designed by OFM. It best meets the needs of four year institutions. CIP_FAC_ Data Type: text CIP TABLE DATA ELEMENTS AGGREGATE Size: 2 Allow Null: Yes Definition: Cip Faculty Aggregation. These are typical groupings by subject area based on the six digit CIP code. Examples of use: The SBCTC uses the academic codes (21-27) in the Fall Quarter report. History: The occupational codes (1-12) were out of date and were replaced by codes (41-56) effective winter quarter 99-00. Effective Winter Quarter 0001, codes 41-56 were replaced by the codes HA – ME. See the CIP Code Table in the Warehouse for specific coding. The crosswalk from code to title can be found in the warehouse table: DW_REF_ENR_CIP_GRP. Codes 01 through 12 and 41 through 56 are out-of-date. Codes HA through ME are vocational, codes 21 through 27 are academic. CIP_TYPE Data Type: text Size: 1 Allow Null: Yes Definition: CIP Type.
