Lesson Plan Title : The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

Grade Level/Subject : 5 th grade Reading/Language Arts / Social Studies

Essential Question :

How is the future shaped by the past and the present?

How can people promote freedom?

Activating Prior Knowledge : Begin a word web about Independence Day. Ask students to brainstorm words or phrases they associate with Independence Day, or the Fourth of July.

In the center circle, write “Fourth of July”. Record answers on the web. Discuss ways they celebrate, as well as what the Revolutionary War has to do with the Fourth of July. When finished, have students individually complete a K-W-L chart on Paul Revere.

Vocabulary Development : fate, fearless, glimmer, lingers, magnified, somber, steed

– students will be doing independent practice on these words as part of their group work – word sort.

Active Participation / Group Activities : Each team of students will work on one of four tasks, rotating every 15 minutes:

Group 1: Guided reading lesson with teacher, using leveled reader Paul

Revere and the American Revolution by Patricia West.

Group 2: Spelling practice on numonics board – battleship http://www.quia.com/ba/189078.html

Group 3: Guided note-taking activity using a time line

– reread the poem and complete the timeline, sequencing the events in the correct order.

Students will make a list of the ten most important events from the story, and plot them on the timeline.

Group 4: Computer activity using primary documents. Students will compare two views of Paul Revere’s Ride. After reading the assignment in the reader, students will go to the Historic Documents of the United

and choose Paul Revere’s

Account of His Midnight Ride to Lexington (1775). Once students have read his account of what really happened, they will complete the compare/contrast activity sheet comparing the two versions of this famous ride.

Evaluation : Each student will complete a self-assessment rubric about their work habits during group time today. The quality of work, attitude, pride, working with others, and focus on the task is assessed.

Connections to other Curriculum :

Social Studies – review of Revolutionary War and key figures in that war.

21 st Century Technology – use of computers, Inspiration software,

Numonics board, laptop, use of internet to research / solve problems

21 st Century Skills - learning to work responsibly and collaboratively with others, in academic and social contexts, to accomplish both individual and team goals.

Writing Skills are used in the development of a journal written as a response to a prompt “Write as if you were Paul Revere and had just gotten back from the Midnight Ride.”
