Safe%Target%Offset%Procedure%for%COS%

!

The!safe!target!offset!procedure!is!used!whenever!a!PI!proposes!to!observe!

targets!subject!to!infrequent!or!unpredictable!outbursts!that!would!exceed!the!

countrate!limits!of!an!HST!instrument,!should!they!occur!during!observation.!!The!

Contact!Scientist!(CS)!for!the!program!should!know!whether!or!not!to!initiate!this!

process!based!on!the!ETC!calculations!submitted!by!the!PI!for!the!target!being!

observed.!!Once!the!CS!opts!for!the!safe!target!offset!procedure!they!must!first!notify!

the!Program!Coordinator!(PC)!who!implements!the!procedure!detailed!in!this!

document!and!formally!resubmits!the!proposal!when!all!the!information!has!been!

entered!and!double!checked.!!The!resubmission!will!include!two!additional!visits!as!

well!as!entering!special!requirements!on!the!science!visit!involved,!and!the!addition!

of!a!safe!offset!target.!!For!the!additional!visits,!one!will!be!used!to!allocate!and!set!

up!the!safe!position!offset!slot!for!the!science!visit!and!is!to!execute!about!3!days!

before!the!science!visit.!!!The!other!is!used!only!for!BOP!checking!the!safe!target!and!

should!not!execute!onboard!HST.!!This!unexecuted!BOP!visit!is!required!because!the!

APT/BOT!will!not!process!visits!with!the!special!commanding!required!to!set!up!this!

procedure.!!A!final!CS!review!is!needed!upon!the!PCs!resubmission,!and!it!is!

recommended!the!CS!comment!on!the!offset!direction!and!magnitude!as!well!as!any!

orient!constraints.!!!

Once!the!CS!submits!a!review!on!the!required!visits,!the!PC!can!set!the!

science!and!S/C!visit!to!“Flight!Ready”!after!Commanding!has!approved!the!S/C!visit.!!

The!BOP,!however!needs!to!have!it’s!visit!status!set!to!“withdrawn”!and!“notQ lrp_candidate.”!!

During!the!week!of!observation,!it!is!highly!recommended!that!the!GO/PI!

maintains!observation!support!for!his!or!her!target.!!Within!24!hours!of!the!

observation!window,!the!GO!is!required!to!submit!the!target’s!magnitude!to!the!CS.!!

Once!the!CS!has!confirmed!that!the!target!is!not!in!outburst!they!give!the!approval!to!

commanding!for!target!execution.!

This!procedure!exists!for!the!health!and!safety!of!HST.!!It!enables!GOs!to!

observe!targets!in!quiescence!that!could!go!into!outburst!with!relatively!low!risk!to!

the!HST.!!Having!this!option!is!advantageous!to!science,!and!it!is!extremely!

important!that!all!parties!involved!do!their!job!accurately!and!thoroughly!for!this!

II.) Set%up%the%Safe%Target%

An!offset!of!9.0Q9.9!arcseconds!is!the!current!acceptable!offset!range!due!to!timing!

restrictions!for!the!telescope!to!slew!within!the!allotted!overhead!time.!!We!

currently!allow!enough!time!for!the!telescope!to!slew!a!maximum!of!10.0!

arcseconds.!!This!equates!to!approximately!27!seconds.!!However,!time!may!be!

compromised!due!to!factors!such!as!nominal!roll!of!the!telescope,!buffer!dumps,!

overhead!time!all!ready!used,!!etc.!!Therefore,!permission!for!an!offset!of!greater!

than!9.8!arcseconds!must!be!granted!by!OED.!!If!a!slew!exceeds!the!allotted!time!for!

whatever!reason,!the!maneuver!will!occur!using!science!exposure!time.!

1.) Click!on!the!BOP!visit!and!“View!in!Aladin”!

2.) When!Aladin!window!appears,!load!the!BOT!tool!as!before!and!note!

that!the!coverage!range!should!have!an!arrow!pointing!north.!

3.) Double!check!that!the!safe!target!is!actually!where!you!intended.!

4.) Zoom!out!and!adjust!the!FOV!to!the!same!U3!you!applied!to!the!science!

visit.!

5.) Zoom!back!in!and!note!that!the!green!arrow!should!now!be!pointing!

towards!U3.!!This!is!the!direction!you!have!to!include!in!the!final!range!

so!as!to!keep!this!visit!schedulable.!

6.) Move!green!arrow!clockwise!and!counterclockwise!noting!the!degrees!

on!the!bottom!of!the!screen.!!Cradle!either!side!of!the!science!target!

and!note!the!degrees.!!Apply!the!min!and!max!degree!to!the!orient!

range!in!the!visit!level!of!the!BOP!in!APT.!!After!doing!so,!you!need!to!

continuously!update!the!BOT!tool!and!apply!the!update!to!both!the!

GSC2!and!GALEX!catalogues!to!see!your!adjustments.!!Repeat!the!

process!until!you’ve!“sliced”!out!the!original!science!target!from!the!

orient!range.!See!Figure!4!for!final!result.!
