College of Social and Behavioral Sciences 2015 Dean’s May Challenge Grants: Innovative Teaching Initiative or Student Recruitment Plan The Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences announces the availability of CSBS challenge grants: Innovative Teaching Initiative or Student Recruitment Plan. These grants provide salary funding up to $2,000, to allow tenured and probationary faculty the ability to undertake innovative teaching initiatives or work within their departments to develop innovative recruitment plans for their programs. Award monies will be provided at the end of May 2015. Monies can be used for innovations such as: 1. Creation of a new course on diversity, or explicit incorporation of diversity issues into an existing course. 2. Integration of new technologies, not currently used, into course components. 3. Development of a summer camp for high school students. 4. Development of a new interdisciplinary course. 5. Establishment of a new service learning initiative or significant experiential learning activities for students. 6. Creation of a student recruitment plan for one or more academic programs at UNI. Recruitment activities may include crafting recruitment materials, developing a communication and recruitment plan for a program, and/or visiting community colleges to recruit transfer students. Requirements 1. Complete the attached cover page with requested information. 2. Provide a proposal of no more than 5 pages. a. Summarize the project. b. Indicate the need for the proposal and the benefits to applicant and program/s. c. Describe any collaborators on the project and their role if applicable. d. Provide a timeline for the proposal. 3. Include a budget outline, if purchasing items through a department or the College. 4. Successful applicants cannot teach during May 2015 and total university compensation for the month of May cannot exceed 100 percent of salary (i.e., 1/9th of the academic year salary). Progress Report Due Date Successful applicants are expected to submit an electronic report on their progress by 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2015. Email the progress report to: Gregory.Bruess@uni.edu Final Report Due Date Awardees must submit a final report providing a summary of the results of this grant by 5 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2016. The summary should include evidence of how teaching innovations or recruitment plans benefited students, the applicant, and the college.
