All around us spring is bursting into action, with spring flowering trees and bulbs en mass
stretching to meet the welcome sun. As our gardens wake up again after the long winter,
now is the time for us all to get up and active and put our green-fingers to good use. Make

Things to do now in the garden
Spring Clean
Gardening is easy, fun and can provide lots of additional benefits above and beyond a great
display and the sense of satisfaction it gives. If you are a true first timer, but willing to give it
a go, there are lots of jobs you might consider, but even tidying up the garden can
immediately make it look better. Cut the grass and trim the edges for instant impact. If you
have flower beds, you can remove dead and dry leaves and any unwanted detritus. A mulch
of leaf mould, well rotted manure or chipped bark can improve fertility and suppress weed
growth. You might even consider setting up a compost bin for garden waste or installing a
water butt.
Buying and Planting Summer Flowering Bulbs
Summer flowering bulbs such as lilies should be planted during spring. Bulbs grow best in
soil that is well drained and contains a reasonable amount of organic matter and also grow
well in Pots and Containers. Simple and great fun for children to do, and the results will
have them hooked for life. The usual rule is to plant bulbs, using a trowel, in holes three
times deeper than their height, that is, a 15cm hole for bulbs 5cm in height.
Plant Bare Root Trees
There is space in every garden for at least one tree. Get expert advice on what will suit your
garden's size and conditions, and make it your mission to plant a tree this year. While you
will enjoy it, it will also be enjoyed by generations to come.
Container grown trees can be planted at any time of the year, but will benefit from the
moisture retained in the soil before it dries out during summer.
Choosing shrubs
A good reason to buy shrubs now is that you can select one that looks really colourful at this
time of year ensuring that you will always have something to admire in every season. If you
have space, try to pick a least one shrub that will look good during each season, then your
garden will never be dull.
