“Modeling variable speed in assessment testing”
Observed response times are assumed to be indicators of an underlying
latent variable which represents the speed of working. The individual speed
of working in educational assessments is commonly modeled as fixed
throughout the entire set of items. Van der Linden (2007), and others,
assume a constant working speed in relation to a certain accuracy level. This
accuracy-speed trade-off is assumed to be constant through the test but this
assumption of constant working speed might be too restrictive. An example
of a violation of this assumption is speededness towards the end of a test or
students showing a decreasing speed over time due to fatigue. In this
presentation, we will consider models for heterogeneity in speed levels both
between and within individual test takers.
