STUDENT HEALTH CLINIC
ANNUAL REPORT 2011
Executive Summary:
The Student Health Clinic offers services for today's college student. Our goal is to help students to understand the
responsibility for their health choices today to ensure a healthy future. We strive to achieve this goal by providing health
education to students during patient focused office visits. Health education increases student knowledge and awareness of
health behaviors and how these may impact their ability to return to classes and their long-term well-being.
In the fall of 2010, the Student Health Clinic again focused efforts on keeping the campus healthy. We promoted the
importance of flu vaccinations, and students, faculty and staff responded by participating in our campus wide flu shot
clinics. We were able to administer 2,223 flu vaccines during the 2010-2011 academic year. We also conducted a
University-wide tabletop exercise scenario for meningitis outbreak. The tabletop exercise was a low-stress event that
facilitated better preparedness for a Public Health disaster by evaluating plans and systems without suffering the
consequences of a real event. The tabletop exercise allowed participants the ability to provide constructive discussion.
Sixty-one attendees examined and resolved problems and developed a coordinated response to the fictional scenario
provided in the exercise.
The SHC responded to an increased need for services for students by adding a new provider and health care and laboratory
services. The first area we addressed was to meet the increased need for mental health services by hiring a part-time
psychiatric nurse practitioner. Secondly, we began to offer a non-invasive procedure, spinal reflex analysis, for students
who were experiencing muscle and joint pain. Lastly, we purchased new equipment to provide in-house laboratory services.
This provides a quick-turn around on lab testing for the students and health care providers and allowed the SHC to partner
with the University Employee Wellness to provide annual blood chemistry screenings for employees.
