OUR MISSION
The mission of the Department of Theatre is to create
theatre which excites and which illuminates the human
condition in ways that are relevant to students, audiences,
community members, teachers and guest artists. To this end,
the department offers coursework and productions that are
diverse, creative and participatory, serving students who
want to prepare for a life in the theatre and also students
who want to prepare a place for theatre in their lives.
We create theatre, and in this process, educate.

2011-2012 SEASON
Guernica
Dying City
Before 9-11, there was Guernica! The Spanish town of
Guernica was home to a tragic historical event that inspired
Picasso to create a masterpiece. Guernica, the play, follows
Eric, a young aspiring artist who meets a man claiming to be
Pablo Picasso, offering him a seductive opportunity: create
an even grander canvas. Join Eric, the Man, and his mysterious friends as they explore the creative process and the
madness of war while the “Guernica”, on exhibition, comes
to life in this passionate, intellectual drama. The StrayerWood Theatre is proud to present the Midwest premiere of
this award-winning play.
In Dying City, a young therapist, Kelly, whose husband Craig
was killed while on military duty in Iraq, is confronted a year
later by his identical twin Peter, who suspects that Craig’s
death was not accidental. Set in a downtown-Manhattan
apartment after dark, scenes shift from the confrontation
between Peter and Kelly, to Kelly’s complicated farewell
with her husband Craig. Shinn’s disturbing, sophisticated
drama—infused with references to 9/11 and the war in
Iraq—explores how contemporary politics and recent history have transformed the lives of these three characters.

Caryl Churchill’s Mad Forest places ordinary people into the
churning realities of acting and defining revolution. With a
wedding being planned, two families must navigate what
should be a joyous occasion of union against the onslaught
of threats, hearsay and chaos, that eventually topple a
megalomaniacal regime. With similar events in Egypt not
too distant, Churchill’s play, set in Romania during December 1989, presents a theatrical perspective on “revolution”
that will speak to us all—as individuals, members of family
and community, and citizens of the world.

Based on events as chronicled in Weekly World News, Bat
Boy: The Musical is a musical comedy/horror show about a
half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near
Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the
local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he is eventually accepted as a
member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy
by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith, and teenage daughter,
Shelley. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he
naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope
Falls, they turn on him, prodded by the machinations of Dr.
Parker, who secretly despises Bat Boy. Shelley and Bat Boy,
who have fallen in love, run away together from the ignorant
townfolk and have a blissful coupling in the woods, but their
happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals
a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin. In between the howls of
laughter and using virtually every style of music, Bat Boy:
The Musical tackles American prejudice, the fierceness of
modern religion, genetic engineering, and lots more.
