September 2012 saw the start of a significant rise in visits to vaccine-related content after a period where visits had been decreasing. From August to September 2012 visits increased by 49%, and from
September to October 2012 visits increased by a further 66%. The latter period also saw the percentage of NHS Choices traffic made up by vaccines content increase from 2.47% to 3.40%.
The cause of the dramatic increases can be attributed to two main factors, the start of the winter flu vaccine campaign and the whooping cough vaccine announcement, which said that all pregnant
women between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy should be offered the vaccine in light of the recent whooping cough outbreak.
The impact of visitors looking for information about the flu vaccine can be seen clearly in October 2012 where the number of visits to the 'Live Well' area of the site, where the 'flu and the flu vaccine'
page is located increased by 455% from September (11314 visits) to October 2012 (62794 visits). The yearly trend for this type of information can also be seen too, with visits to the 'Live Well' area in
October 2011 also inflated too..
