ACS Classic Appliance End-of-Life Plan
EOL Effective Date: March 31, 2011
EOL Overview
Today, Avocent® has three product lines that make up the ACS advanced console server family:
• ACS Classic
• ACS 5000
• ACS 6000
The newest product, the ACS 6000, has been positioned as the full-featured product and the ACS 5000 as the entry-level product. The ACS
Classic has been a combination of the two. Over the last year, features have been added to the ACS 5000 and the ACS 6000 appliances which
have made the ACS Classic obsolete. Therefore, the ACS Classic products have begun the EOL process.
The following conditions apply:
1.As of March 31, 2011, the ACS Classic products will move to EOL status.
2.New orders for ACS Classic models will be accepted through March 31, 2011.
3.After March 31, 2011, any remaining stock of ACS Classic will be made available for purchase until any remaining inventory is depleted.
4.All orders for ACS Classic that are placed on or before March 31, 2011 shall be shippable at any time after March 31, 2011 from
available inventory.
As we move toward EOL status, the build volumes for ACS Classic will decrease resulting in increased unit costs for those products. As a result,
the ACS Classic product will have a price increase.
New capabilities were ported into the ACS 5000 in a firmware update that was released on September 24, 2010. Due to the increased capabilities in the ACS 5000, it too will have a corresponding price increase.
Here is a brief list of the new features that have been added to the ACS 5000 (a complete description can be found in the release notes located
in the Support section).
• Security Profile – Provide preset security profiles (secure, moderate and open)
• New Authentication Services
•Kerberos™ Authentication
•Two-factor authentication (RSA SecurID® authentication)
•One Time Password (OTP)
•NIS Authentication
• Group Authorization – Support authorization based in group access right. The group that the user belongs to can be specified by
remote authentication servers: RADIUS, TACACS+ and LDAP
• Dual stack support with IPv4 and IPv6 - Both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are concurrently supported. As a result of this addition, a few
other enhancements were added:
•ICMPv6 support
•DHCPv6 support: Ethernet IPv6 addresses can be dynamically assigned by a DHCPV6 server
• Linux® kernel upgrade: upgraded the Linux kernel from version 2.6.11.12 to version 2.6.22.1 and enabled IPv6 support.
• IPSec support: IPSec with NAT transversal supported
• IPMI: IPMI Power Management support
• Mindterm support: Mindterm terminal emulator version 3.1.2 is now used to launch serial port sessions using SSH or telnet protocols.
• Power Management Enhancements:
•Support new Avocent rack PDU: PM 1000/2000/3000
•ServerTech Smart CDU™ with version 6.0g or later
