Educational Resources is blooming with new materials. New DVDs and youth books are arriving daily. New reference materials, curriculum guides and realia are refreshing the shelves. Students are busy using circulating digital equipment to complete yearend projects. In addition, there is a new service for requesting holds. New Service for Requesting Holds University Libraries now offers on-shelf holds as a recently initiated new service. A hold request can be submitted to the library for an item that is on the shelf and available for use. Library personnel will retrieve the item listed on the hold request and have it available for pick up at the library within 36 hours. The magic of Disney Walt Disney made a tremendous literary and creative impact on the world through books, animation, and movies. Who doesn’t know Mickey Mouse? With the addition of theme parks, a cruise line, clothing, jewelry, toys, games, and so much more, Disney touches the lives of millions every day. Educational Resources Collections is loaded with Disney DVDs, books, and 3-D materials. Some of the movies are based on true stories and all contain life lessons. Technology, history, nature, psychology, etc., there is much to be learned through Disney. Youth Book Collection The University Libraries’ collections include the Youth Book collection which numbers approximately 35,600 titles. The collection presents a historical perspective with titles dating in the 1800s as well as the latest perspective on new books with titles dated 2011 now being added to the collection. The collection is heavily used by Ball State students who are teaching in the local school systems with topics ranging from biology to biography and all man- ner of fiction. The collection is also used by students taking courses in children’s literature as well as art students studying book illustrations. News from the Educational Resources Collections Page 2 Award Winning Youth Books This year’s Newbery winner is Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool. The story is about Manifest, Kansas during WWI and the Great Depression. Abilene is sent to Manifest by her father during the Depression while he works on the rails. While there, she delves into her father’s past and uncovers secrets of the town. Newbery Award 2011 This year’s Caldecott winner is A Sick Day for Amos McGee illustrated by Erin E. Stead. The book is filled with cute pictures of the animals that visit Amos while he is sick since he cannot go to them as he does every day. What’s New?
