Democracy North Carolina 1821 Green Street, Durham, NC 27705 Telephone (919) 286-6000 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eastern North Carolina Organizer Job Description Democracy North Carolina organizers are responsible for advocacy and education on a range of campaign and election reform issues in North Carolina, with primary emphasis on two 1) the need for a “voter-owned” public campaign financing alternative to be created by the state legislature that would allow state candidates to agree to limit their spending and fundraising in return for public funding for their campaigns and 2) the need for other proactive voting rights reforms in North Carolina, including but not limited to: the extension of same day voter registration from early voting to election day; ethics and lobby reforms; ex-felon re-enfranchisement; improved ballot access; electoral college reform; and instant run-off voting. Responsibilities: Recruiting and training new leaders for pro-democracy issues Coordinating volunteer efforts Mobilizing grassroots voter registration, get-out-the-vote, and other voter actions Coordinating coalition-building efforts with local chapters of statewide organizations, such as the NAACP, conservation organizations, League of Women Voters, religious organizations, political organizations, etc. Courting and asking for chances at public speaking with local community groups Representing the organization at public events Working with media by writing letters to the editor, submitting op-eds, performing interviews on the radio and television Coordinating phone/email/newsletter communication networks to build and maintain the movement in North Carolina Organizing events, rallies, and activities to further the mission of Democracy North Carolina Connecting electoral reform efforts with broader social justice issues Staying abreast of current events within NC politics and the national campaign reform movement. Helping to implement a public education campaign, coordinate a canvass plan, solicit phone calls to public decision makers, organize visits by constituents, and rally public support for pro-democracy issues.
