Mildred Moore is most well known for being the former chair of the Ball State Home Economics department from 1951-1973 having taken charge of the department after Mary Beeman's retirement.
Originally born in Mahaska County Iowa in 1906, she was a graduate of William Penn College and received her masters in education from Iowa State University in 1943. Before coming to Ball State
Teachers College, she worked at the University of Illinois, Stout State University and several Iowa high schools. The Moore Unit of the Home Management Complex was named in her honor and a scholarship for students seeking to study home economics/family and consumer sciences is named after her.
In addition to her work at Ball State University, Ms. Moore was also the president of the Indiana Home
Economics Association for two years, president of the Muncie Altrusa club for 19 years. Before taking up teaching, she owned and operated a farm near Des Moines, Iowa where she raised Black Angus cattle.
