THE GLOBALORIA PILOTS AT A GLANCE Since its launch in the summer of 2006, the Globaloria.org platform, thematic networks, program, curriculum and resources have been successfully piloted in a variety of settings and locations throughout the United States and worldwide. This Research Symposium presents research efforts focusing on two implementation models: 1. Globaloria in West Virginia: A Public School System Model of Scaling the Integration of a Statewide Learning Network into Multiple Locations – 1 County/School/Teacher at a Time 2. Globaloria in Texas: A Charter School System Model of Full Integration of Globaloria into the Daily Curriculum for the Entire School Body of Students Below are overviews of both models and indicators of progress to date. 1. Globaloria in West Virginia: A Public School System Model of Scaling the Integration of a Statewide Learning Network into Multiple Locations – 1 County/School/Teacher at a Time www.Globaloria.org/wv/ A first-of-its-kind statewide network for learning, this model demonstrates the potential for Globaloria to be implemented on a large scale, integrated at multiple grade levels, across the public school system and higher education. Currently in its fourth year of operations, Globaloria WV has expanded to include 1300 students and educators from 41 middle schools, high schools, community colleges and alternative education programs across the state. Educators engage in intensive ongoing in-person and virtual professional development programs (3 in-person and 8 virtual trainings). They learn to implement Globaloria as an integrated program within the school curriculum, aligning the program with state standards and objectives in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and 21st Century Skills. This program is conducted in collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Education, the WV Governor’s Office, and private and public foundations in West Virginia. Globaloria in Texas: A Charter School System Model of Full Integration of Globaloria into the Daily Curriculum for the Entire School Body of Students www.MyGLife.org/usa/tx/ Launched in July 2009, the Globaloria pilot at the East Austin College Preparatory Academy (EACPA) is the first implementation of Globaloria in a charter school. At EACPA , five groups of students attend a 90-minute Globaloria class 5 days a week. One lead educator teaches the class with support from a technology integration specialist. Globaloria at EACPA provides enrichment and supports student learning in a variety of school subjects where students have shown the greatest need – Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Health. The Year 1 Pilot was focused on Math. Educators participate in three in-person and eight virtual training sessions during the year. In Pilot Year 1, all sixth grade students, 90 total, and four educators participated in Globaloria at EACPA. As a new charter school, EACPA will add a new grade level each year. In Pilot Year 2, all sixth and seventh graders, approximately 200 students, will use the Globaloria platform and curriculum to help them excel in STEM learning. The World Wide Workshop Foundation is collaborating with the AMD Foundation and Southwest Key Programs on this pilot implementation.
