West Virginia School Counseling Protocol
English 12 College and Career Ready (English 12 CCR) and the COMPASS®
Activity Description: The school counselor will facilitate a process for students, school staff, and parents to understand enrollment guidelines for the English 12 CCR. Additionally, this protocol explains how to interpret and use the enrollment guidelines for the COMPASS Writing Skills test results, as well as, how the COMPASS results will impact course placement when entering college. School Counselor Performance Standard 2: The professional school counselor facilitates delivery of the WV Comprehensive Developmental School Counseling Program for all students. Function 2D: Individual student planning: the professional school counselor coordinates an ongoing systemic approach to assist individual students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans. Indicator 2D1: The professional school counselor facilitates a collaborative approach to student academic and career planning. Indicator 2G2: Preparation for Post School Success: the professional school counselor facilitates a systemic process for preparing students to transition from public schools to post‐secondary success. GOAL: The counselor will facilitate a process to assist students, parents, and staff with understanding the
high school enrollment guidelines for the English 12 CR courses and how to interpret and use COMPASS
results, including the impact of performance on the COMPASS tests on college course enrollment.
Rationale: The vision of the West Virginia Board of Education is “all West Virginia students will exceed national educational standards and prepare for higher learning and the world of work through the programs, services and offerings of West Virginia’s thorough, efficient, safe and nurturing education system.” Counselors need to stay abreast of changes in graduation requirements and course offerings in order to facilitate enrollment in appropriate courses based on each student’s abilities and future plans. Additionally, counselors must understand test score requirements for college admissions and placement into college‐level English courses at West Virginia public colleges and universities as well as for specific institutional requirements. It is vital for students, parents and school staff to understand the relationship among high school coursework, COMPASS results, and academic and career planning. This protocol is intended to supplement the activities described in West Virginia School Counseling Protocol: The Counselor Role in the Senior Year 12th Grade, for additional information and resources (http://wvde.state.wv.us/counselors/documents/Protocol‐CounselorRoleintheSeniorYear‐revDec2010.doc). 1 Developers: Lori Helmick, Magnolia HS; Teija Neville, Washington HS; Tina Holley, Ripley HS, Nicki Parrish, Mountaineer Middle; Katie Linkous, McDowell CTC; Patrick Leggett, Mason County; Cary Kyle, Keiser HS Barbara Ashcraft, School Counseling Coordinator, WVDE and Dr. Beth Cipoletti, Assistant Director, Office of Assessment and Accountability, WVDE West Virginia School Counseling Protocol
