Use of Time Log Are Counselor logs mandatory? NO WVDE does not require counselors to keep a particular log. However, the Office of Educational Performance Audits requires counselors to document aligned with WV Code and WVBOE Policy 2315 that require counselors to spend 75% of their time in direct services to students and the other 25% planning and managing the school counseling program and other indirect time related to the delivery of the school counseling program. A web‐based log has been developed that aligns with school counseling delivery systems as an optional tool. Can counties require these logs? Some counties require counselors to keep the WVDE or another specific log to document their time and show alignment with policy and code. This is a local control state, meaning counties can add additional requirements that are not mandated by the state. What is the appropriate and intended use of the WVDE web‐based logs? The appropriate and intended use of the WVDE log is to assist counselors in analyzing how they are actually using their time and assist with future planning. This analysis helps the counselor see if their time is balanced between delivery systems (classroom guidance, individual student planning, responsive services, and student supports). It also helps them to analyze if they are balancing their time between delivery of the academic, career, and personal/social development standards. The primary focus of the counselor is to facilitate the delivery of a developmentally appropriate, standards‐based comprehensive school counseling program to all students ensuring the student standards are pervasively implemented. Another use of the log is communication between the counselor and principal. If counselors are being utilized for non‐counseling duties or over utilized in a particular delivery system, it assists with having gentle conversations that guide the counselor and principal to plan how to spend more time with direct student services, planning the school counseling program, and facilitating delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program for all students.
