Rationale: The vision of the West Virginia Board of Education is “all West Virginia students will exceed national educational standards and prepare for higher learning and the world of work through the programs, services and offerings of West Virginia’s thorough, efficient, safe and nurturing education system.” Counselors need to stay current with changing graduation requirements and course offerings in order to facilitate enrollment in appropriate courses based on each student’s abilities and future plans. Additionally, counselors must understand test score requirements for college admission and placement in West Virginia public colleges and universities. It is vital for students, parents and, school staff to understand the relationship among high school math courses, COMPASS results, and post‐
secondary planning. This protocol is intended to supplement the activities described in West Virginia School Counseling Protocol: The Counselor Role in the Senior Year 12th Grade, for additional information and resources (http://wvde.state.wv.us/counselors/documents/Protocol‐CounselorRoleintheSeniorYear‐revDec2010.doc).
