West Virginia School Counseling Protocol Credit Recovery 9 ‐ 12 Activity Description: The school counselor will review existing reports at the end of each semester to ensure the student is on track for graduation (i.e. progress reports, WVEIS, DFI reports, transcripts, etc.) and assist all students with needs in developing a credit recovery plan. Related Standards Standard 2: Program Delivery: The professional school counselor facilitates delivery of the WV Comprehensive Developmental School Counseling Program for all students. Function 2E – RESPONSIVE SERVICE The professional school counselor provides a continuum of interventions in response to student needs. Indicator 2E2 The professional school counselor collaborates with others to provide access to early and ongoing interventions for at‐risk students. Indicator 2E3 The professional school counselor counsels individual students with identified needs to improve school success. Indicator 2E5 The professional school counselor partners with others to develop, communicate, and maintain a crisis prevention/ response plan and follows the response plan as needed. Function 2F – STUDENT SUPPORTS The professional school counselor assists in developing comprehensive student supports within the school and community to support academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. Indicator 2F1 The professional school counselor contributes to a school climate that is learning‐centered and fosters the belief that all share a responsibility for the success of each student. Indicator 2F2 The professional school partners with school teams to promote student success. GOAL: To provide students ample opportunity to acquire the necessary credits to graduate including those they have failed. Rationale: In a continued effort to further the education and successes of all high school students, the onTargetWV Credit Recovery Program has become a viable and necessary option in the high school schedule. Dropout prevention is a major concern for the state of West Virginia and is related to various issues including social/emotional problems, illness, lack of motivation and learning difficulties. Identify off track students who have failed a full or half credit course. Check course listing to determine if credit recovery course is available. (http://virtualschool.k12.wv.us/vschool/courses/crcatalog.cfm) Contact parent and student to discuss the best time for recovering credit such as • after school program, • before school program, • Saturday program, • scheduled class period during the school day, • summer school, • lunch time program, or • at home after school hours. At the meeting • discuss failure, • discuss impact on graduation, • Discuss accommodations they relate to IEP, SAT, 504, etc…. when necessary. • explain credit recovery program, • explain the commitment required to be successful, and • complete consent form • Acquire consent from appropriate administration as necessary. Contact appropriate person in school to acquire an access email account for the student. Contact appropriate person to assign student to mentor. Contact appropriate person to enroll student in credit recovery course. Upon completion of course, ensure grade is transcribed to permanent record.
