Study Technique 3 – Handout 3 GRADE 6 LESSON 6 Introduction and Instructions: Study skills development is important because it can help students with: o Development of positive work habits o Setting goals o Using planners effectively o Managing their time o Understanding and using vocabulary o Understanding and using various mnemonic strategies o Developing reading strategies o Taking effective notes o Keeping track of homework o Planning how and when to study for tests o Making use of other strategies based on personal learning style For this activity, your team will do the following: o Read and discuss the study technique article below. o Develop a brief presentation of an example of when this strategy could be used. o Explain the strategy and share the presentation with your class. Music, Cheers, Raps, and Poetry Music and rhymes can be very useful in helping students study and remember information. There are many possible benefits: It’s a fun activity. It provides a change of pace. It allows students to be creative. It provides patterns that can make learning easier. It can help build teamwork. To offer an example of using this strategy, I am reminded of helping my child with homework when he was in elementary school. He didn’t like to study spelling words, so we made it into a game. We practiced spelling the words in a chant adding claps and stomps to add to the rhythm. It didn’t take long for him to notice an improvement in grades because he started using a strategy that was effective for him. This strategy could be extended to use chants or cheers, songs, etc. Physical motions, such as claps, stomps, and snaps, can be used to further enhance the strategy. Some students learn better if they have the opportunity to move around while they are learning. Use rhyming words, maybe silly rhymes to remember words and phrases Repeat words in a rhythm that forms a pattern Sing a lesson using your own notes or add your words to a familiar tune Add motions to punctuate the rhythm and make it easier to remember Combine words and rhythm like a cheer and cheer the lesson you want to remember Practice your strategy out loud repeatedly until you know it well. When you are in class and need to recall the information, you will think it inside your head without saying it out loud. From: Dr. Penny Fisher
