Historical Note
In 1985, the first annual Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Days of Remembrance) observance at Ball State
University was organized by the now defunct campus ministry organization, United Ministries, under the
leadership of Rev. Charles W. Shannon. Survivor Alexander Lande (d. 1993) was the first speaker during
that inaugural occasion. In 1994, following Rev. Shannon’s move to Missouri, Richard Fears, Instructor
in Religious Studies, became the head of the coordinating committee responsible for organizing the
annual observance. Soon thereafter, campus observances came under the umbrella of the Jewish Studies
Project, headed by Judy Koor and followed by David Kamens and Francine Friedman. Ecumenical in
organization, Yom HaShoah observance events have been held at several locations on and off campus,
including the Catholic Newman Center, the First Presbyterian Church, the College Avenue Methodist
Church, and Temple Beth El. Along with services, guest speakers, films, concerts, and poster displays,
observances have also created exhibits for display in Bracken Library.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes annual records and administrative files from the United Ministries organization
of Ball State University ranging from 1985-2004 regarding the Holocaust Day of Remembrance Yom
HaShoah.
