Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History
In 1955 Nila Kirkpatrick Covalt started a conference on aging in memory of her parents J. Walter and
Arrena I. Kirkpatrick under the name of the J. Walter and Arrena I. Kirkpatrick Memorial Workshop
and/or Lectureship. Per J. Walter's wishes, upon his death in 1953 the family home was donated to the
Muncie Women's Club to provide a base for a new organization for senior citizens: the Golden Age Club.
Arrena (d. 1947) had actively participated in the Women's Club and J. Walter wanted to help the club in
remembrance of her. The Women's Club was unable to accept the donation due to problems in financing
the maintenance of the home. In lieu of this, Lall Montgomery and Bruce Stocking of Ball State Teachers'
College introduced the idea for a lectureship and workshop dedicated to the same ideals: to further studies
in the field of gerontology and community service for the aged. Wilma Donahue from the University of
Michigan and John D. Van Nuys from the Indiana University School of Medicine helped to shape the
concept of the lectureship further. Funding came from a trust set up by Nila Kirkpatrick which housed
the proceedings raised from the sale of her family home. This trust transferred annually $2000 divided
between Ball State and Indiana University Medical Center for the endowment of the lectureship. In 1959,
the two conferences on aging held in Indiana- at the above-mentioned schools- merged to become a
single conference held at Ball State. This also merged the funding for the two conferences. When Nila
died in 1975 she ensured the continuance of the conference by setting forth a bequest for a further trust
from her personal funds. The Kirkpatrick Conference has worked with many agencies and organizations
throughout the country which deal with geriatrics: Indiana State Commission of the Aging and Aged,
US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Muncie Academy of Medicine, Delaware- Blackford
County Medical Society as well as various universities and academic programs. A further broadening of
the goals and parameters of the conference came in 1989 when Gary Meunier, professor of psychology
and Director of the Institute of Gerontology at Ball State, became coordinator of the conference. He added
mental health to the scope of the conference which became the Kirkpatrick Memorial Conference on
Aging and Mental Health. This began a much larger involvement from other academic fields such as
sociology, psychology, physical education, nursing, and physiology and health science. Royda Crose
became director of the Institute of Gerontology at Ball State in 1993 and as well as coordinator for the
Kirkpatrick Conference adding her experience in clinical psychology to the scope of the studies on aging.
Scope and Contents
The Kirkpatrick Memorial Conference on Aging collection contains material dating from 1954 to 1997,
including: reports, registration, mailing lists, costs, speeches, programs and brochures, correspondence,
evaluations, news clippings, cassette recordings, photographs, news releases, publicity material, programs
and other related material.

The collection is arranged chronologically by year of conference with some further breakdown within
those years. In most instances the conference files are in one folder with all papers relating to that year
contained within. In other cases, however, the records are subdivided by type of material according to the
original structure.
