Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History
IHETS is an acronym for the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System. Centered in
Indianapolis and established in 1967, IHETS Video Network linked all main and some regional campuses
of Indiana’s publicly funded universities as well as some adjacent hospitals. The organization’s primary
goal was to use television in order to make higher education more accessible to all of Indiana’s people.
IHETS pledged to instate at least one station for each of Indiana’s 92 counties and to have transmitters
in 24 cities by 1990. Through IHETS, people all over the state participate in high school courses,
undergraduate level courses, graduate level courses, personal enrichment programs, and professional
programs. Seventy-five percent of IHETS programming was directed towards credit-earning coursework.
Ball State’s key effort involves the availability of its MBA degree program to non-local students over the
network. Additionally, IHETS was used to transmit satellite-transmitted intrastate television conferences
to areas where satellite reception is not available.
Scope and Contents
The IHETS collection contains correspondence, memorandums, programming information, newsletters,
records, and contracts, which pertain mostly to Ball State’s involvement with the IHETS video network.
The documents contained in this collection are from the mid-1980s and end in 1991.
