Heather L. Balog, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, earned her B.A. in Communication
Sciences and Disorders (1994) and her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology
(1996) from the University of Northern Iowa. She earned her Ph.D. from Purdue
University (2004). Her research interests include phonology (both segmental
and suprasegmental), pragmatic language acquisition, vocabulary and emergent
literacy development in preschoolers and assessment of at risk populations. Her
most recent research has been focused on determining evidence based practice
standards for screening and diagnosing speech and language impairment in lowsocioeconomic and minority preschoolers.
Carlin Hageman, Ph.D., is a professor and the head of the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Northern Iowa
(UNI). He has served as the Executive Director of NSSLHA since 2004. Dr.
Hageman, an Iowa Regents Scholar 2004-2005, is currently serving as President
of ISHA. His publications and presentations are in the areas of dysphagia, aphasia,
motor speech disorders, perception of accented speech and the application of
motor learning principles to therapy or speech disorders.
Joy Hesse, M.A., CCC-SLP, is a practicing speech-language pathologist at ENT
Clinic of Iowa, P.C., in West Des Moines. She is a graduate of the University of
Northern Iowa. Ms. Hesse has worked in acute care, outpatient rehabilitation
and presently a private office setting. For the past 13 years, she has specialized in
evaluation and treatment of voice problems, head and neck cancer, dysphagia,
and pediatric and adult airway. Hesse lectures regularly in the Midwest on voice
disorders and has lectured nationally at ASHA on the efficacy of the FEESST
examination.
Angela Hoth, Pharm.D., is currently a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Iowa
City VA Medical Center, adjunct faculty at the University of Iowa College of
Pharmacy and a Clinical Pharmacy consultant on community projects to enhance
mental health care in the primary care setting for aging Iowans. She received her
B.S. Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, Pharm.D. at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed a residency in Ambulatory
Care & Geriatrics at the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center in San Antonio,

settings and the VA has provided Dr. Hoth with broad-based experiences in
identifying, resolving and preventing medication-related problems in adults.

and Disorders (2006) and her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology (2008) from
the University of Northern Iowa. She is a doctoral ABD candidate in Speech

are with young bilingual children, particularly Spanish-speaking. She is interested
in examining assessment and intervention resources for children from culturally
and linguistically-diverse backgrounds, especially literacy. Her work experience
includes primarily working with preschool and school-age children, as well as
assisting with FSU’s bilingual assessment team. The Sunshine State has treated her
well, but she is excited to hopefully be moving back to the Midwest by the end of
the year.
