Biography
Appointed in 1984, Dr. John E. Worthen was the eleventh president of Ball State University. A
native of southern Illinois, he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1954 from
Northwestern University, a master’ degree in student personnel administration from Columbia
University in 1955, and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology and administration in higher
education from Harvard University. Before his appointment at Ball State, Dr. Worthen was
president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1984; he served sixteen years at
the University of Delaware, including ten years as vice president, and was dean of men at
American University in Washington, D.C. from 1959 - 1961.

Scope and Content
Speeches, correspondence, budget information, president’s reports, memos, and awards
presented to Dr. Worthen while he served as president of Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana,
from 1984-2000. Records prior to his presidency include speeches dated from 1973-1977.
President Worthen’s papers have been grouped into the following series: Budget Presentation
File, Correspondence, General Office Files, Speeches, Inauguration Materials, and Awards
& Certificates.
Budget Presentation File materials include budget proposals, requests, and supporting materials
presented to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) and the Indiana state
legislature between 1984 and 1998 concerning Ball State University budget and legislative
requests.
Correspondence includes the incoming and outgoing communications of President Worthen,
1985-1999. Arranged chronologically.
General Office Files include memos, committee records, letters, reports, news clippings and
related materials from President Worthen, 1983-2000.
Speeches include orations and addresses to a variety of university, state, local and professional
organizations, 1973-2000. Arranged chronologically.
Inauguration Materials include certificates of congratulations, correspondence, programs and
related materials from President Worthen’s 1984 inauguration.
