Summer Pre-College THEATRE INSTITUTE When Caroline spent two weeks of her summer at Marist’s campus in New York, she lived in a dorm, took a class in Theatre Performance, attended acting classes, and visited New York City for a Broadway show. But Caroline is, in fact, not a college student; Caroline attended the Summer Pre-College program before she even began her senior year of high school. Expand your academic and creative aspirations! Marist’s Summer Pre-College is a summer academic program exclusively for rising juniors and seniors in high school. During your time here, you’ll learn from experienced theatre faculty and professionals, while spending 14 days in the heart of the historic Hudson River Valley. You’ll make new friends and maybe even discover what you want to be when you grow up. Think that’ll happen at a summer job? “25 Most Connected Campuses” by the Princeton Review. Do you love theatre? Would you like to study theatre as a way to prepare for a wide variety of career paths? This program teaches you college-level acting and public speaking techniques and delves into the world of theatre, while introducing you to the broader college experience. Mornings are filled with theatre games and scene rehearsals, and afternoons are spent learning the roles of theatre artists, actors, directors, designers, playwrights and producers. The program includes seeing theatre with a trip to Broadway and a backstage tour (as available.) Through the Marist Summer Pre-College Program, high school students can experience college life while immersing themselves in academic study and taking advantage of additional career opportunities. With the support of Marist staff, students graduate the Pre-College Program saying, “This was the best summer of my life” and travel home with a newly developed resume, an enhanced skill set, and the confidence essential for success in college. Acquire and sharpen acting skills with hands-on experience. Build confidence in your ability to perform in front of an audience in an informal and supportive atmosphere. Discover your personal talents and interests as they relate to theatre: playwright, director, designer or actor. Share writing ideas and strategies with your peers in a friendly workshop environment. Upon successful completion of the Summer TheatreInstitute, each student earns three college credits for the Marist College course ENG 150 Intro to Theatre, a required course for all Marist students studying in our academic theatre program. “Overall, the program at Marist was more than what I thought it would be. Participants learn about the industry from professionals who could become their professors if they attend Marist as undergraduate students. Campus Life Students get the opportunity to experience college life by living in dorms, eating in the dining hall, and meeting new friends from around the world. They can explore the beautiful campus and get a sense of what college-life is like at Marist. Resume Building Students can boost their resume (and their career) by attending a 3-credit college class before they finish high school. They also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and potentially earn letters of recommendation.
