Summer Pre-College MILITARY HISTORY When Will spent two weeks of his summer at Marist’s campus in New York, she lived in a dorm, took a class in U.S. Military History, and visited historic sites in the Hudson River Valley. But Will is, in fact, not a college student; Will attended the Summer Pre-College program before he even began her senior year of high school. Expand your academic and creative aspirations! Marist’s Summer Pre-College is a summer academic program exclusively for rising juniors and seniors in high school. During your time here, you’ll learn from experienced professionals and talented faculty, while spending 14 days in the heart of the historic Hudson River Valley. Students will get the chance to examine the history behind the evolution of American warfare from the perspective of the pivotal role the historic, Hudson River Valley played. We welcome student to explore this unique program where Marist faculty members with years of extensive experience and knowledge, will guide students through topics such as how warfare has changed over the centuries in America, and how war has influenced the cultural, political and economic factors on United States’ armed forces. History will also come to life with opportunities to dress, reenact and live life as soldiers of war as well 2016 Dates: as visit some notable historic sites in the July 10 - 23 Hudson Valley area. The New York campus offers one of the most scenic settings in the heart of the Hudson River Valley, an area renowned for over 400 years of American history. The campus is bordered by the Hudson River on the western side and a lush 15-acre arboretum and hiking area on the northern end of campus. Located 90 miles north of metropolitan New York City, the Marist location provides both breathtaking views and outstanding professional resources to enhance your college experience. Program Goals: • • • • • Learn about the significant developments in warfare and the evolution of the American military institution. Understand the crucial role of generalship/leadership in determining victory and defeat through prominent military leaders from Washington to Petraeus. Analyze the influence of diverse political, cultural, and economic factors on United States’ armed forces. Experience living history as a soldier in the American Revolution and Civil War at historic sites in the Hudson River Valley. Upon successful completion of the Summer American Military History Institute, each student earns three college credits for the Marist College course Hist223, US Military History. “Overall, the program at Marist was more than what I thought it would be. Participants learn about the industry from professionals who could become their professors if they attend Marist as undergraduate students Campus Life Students get the opportunity to experience college life by living in dorms, eating in the dining hall, and meeting new friends from around the world. They can explore the beautiful campus and get a sense of what college-life is like at Marist. Resume Building Students can boost their resume (and their career) by attending a 3-credit college class before they finish high school. They also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and potentially earn letters of recommendation.
