Summer Pre-College FASHION DESIGN When Marissa spent two weeks of her summer at Marist’s campus in New York, she lived in a dorm, took a class in Fashion Design, and visited New York City to meet with industry professionals. Expand your academic and creative aspirations! Marist’s Summer Pre-College is a summer academic program exclusively for rising juniors and seniors in high school. During your time here, you’ll learn from experienced professionals and talented faculty, while spending 14 days in the heart of the historic Hudson River Valley. You’ll make new friends and maybe even discover what you want to be when you grow up. Think that’ll happen at a summer job? Do you have what it takes to become a fashion designer? Are you interested in pursuing a career in the Fashion Industry? If yes, then the Marist Summer PreCollege Introduction to Fashion Design Program may be perfect for you. The curriculum is taught by the faculty of the highly regarded Fashion Program at Marist, who all have extensive experience in the fashion industry and related fields. In addition to focusing on apparel construction and preparation, studio and classroom discussion will include trends, color, fashion figure drawing and the history of fashion. Students will take field trips to New York City to visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the fabric and design showrooms of 7th Avenue in order to further enrich the student’s understanding of the career opportunities available to fashion designers. 2016 Dates: June 26 - July 9 The New York campus offers one of the most scenic settings in the heart of the Hudson River Valley, an area renowned for over 400 years of American history. The campus is bordered by the Hudson River on the western side and a lush 15-acre arboretum and hiking area on the northern end of campus. Through the Marist Summer Pre-College Program, high school students can experience college life while immersing themselves in academic study and taking advantage of additional career opportunities. Develop a personal line, style, and personality in figure presentation. Learn basic drawing skills and color theory to portray fundamental fashion figures and garment details. Learn about purchasing fabric and trims, steps in garment construction and costing the garments. Travel to New York City to learn more about the industry from professionals in the field. Upon completion of the course, high school students will receive three college credits along with the opportunity to explore the exciting world of fashion design. “Overall, the program at Marist was more than what I thought it would be. They can explore the beautiful campus and get a sense of what college-life is like at Marist. Resume Building Students can boost their resume (and their career) by attending a 3-credit college class before they finish high school. They also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and potentially earn letters of recommendation.
