Co-develop and teach an interdisciplinary master of public health (MPH) curriculum
combining problem-based learning and didactic methods; teach and mentor MPH &
doctoral students including oversight of community-based master’s projects and

Opening Doors for Diverse Populations to Health Disparities Research Training
Grant (September 2011 – 2016). Curriculum coordinator for $1.7 million,
five-year science education program funded by the National Institute of Minority
Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health, designed to
increase the number of health disparities researchers by providing educational
and mentored research opportunities for 27 undergraduate, graduate and
doctoral students annually.
Completed
Participatory Statewide Evaluation of the Pennsylvania Cancer Education Network,
Commonwealth of PA, and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, (PI: Lisa Ulmer,
4/1/06 – 6/30/11). Served as co-investigator leading investigations of multicultural
competency since July 2008. Responsible for the analysis and improvement of cancer
education for underserved vulnerable minority groups participating in projects
associated with the PA Cancer Prevention and Control Division supportive of Act 33,

and the PA Cancer Control Plan. This evaluation sought to understand the structure
and functioning of the Cancer Education Network from a systems perspective, detailing
and analyzing inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. Data collection completed in
June 2009 pertaining to prevention efforts across 16 State Department of Health
contractors was analyzed to further identify cultural and ethnic differences from
contextual influences that need to be accounted in future cancer education and
outreach activities aimed at Hispanic populations.
Evaluation of Riverside Prison Project, Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania
(2008-2009 (PI, Villanueva). Served as evaluator of a sexuality education and lifeskills program designed for women and teenage girls housed at Philadelphia’s Riverside
Correctional Facility. The project focused on outcomes assessment derived from a sixweek curriculum developed specifically for this population, and one-on-one social
services and counseling. The project sought to enhance participants’ knowledge of
basic anatomy, HIV prevention, and negotiation skills, 2) increase access to and
utilization of critical behavioral health services, and 3) evaluate methods and outcomes
of its activities and services.
Evaluation of the PA Cancer Control Plan, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania & Centers
for Disease Control & Prevention (1/1/08-6/30/08). Served as co-investigator
responsible for analyzing and improving cancer education for underserved vulnerable
minority groups as part of a comprehensive, scientifically rigorous, and independent
evaluation of projects associated with the PA Cancer Prevention and Control Division

Evaluator of two extended day treatment programs for dependent, truant, and
adjudicated adolescents sponsored by Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc., in
Philadelphia, funded by the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Mental Health
Services, Philadelphia Department of Human Services, and the School District of
Philadelphia. The Boys’ and Girls’ Centers delivered family-oriented and genderspecific programming to meet participants’ educational, social, psychological, and
social functioning needs within a comprehensive strategy (2002-2004)

Applied Research with Planned Parenthood (2004-2006). (PI, Villanueva). Evaluation of
sexual health education project in three Philadelphia middle schools, in collaboration
with Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania. This evaluation focused on
assessing the effectiveness of the Planned Parenthood Southeastern Youth First project,
in enabling middle school children in three Philadelphia public schools to make positive
and healthy decisions about their health.

§ Served as co-investigator on project led by Dr. Salvatore Mangione and funded
by Schering Plough investigating socio-economic and psychosocial factors linked
to control of asthma between low-income Latino/Hispanic and African-Americans
attending nine local middle schools. I developed and conducted pre- and postintervention qualitative assessments (1998-2000)
