Abstract z..a t I

Sigma Kappa's Gamma Eta chapter has been on Ball State's campus for over 50 years. Documenting the history of the chapter is pertinent to having a successful future . For the past year and a half, I have been collecting and analyzing information about Gamma Eta's history. Research for this project included many interviews, collecting information from past documents, and multiple trips to national headquarters in I , ndianapolis . The following items are a compilation of my research broken down in to two main components: a DVD and a brochure .

The DVD acts as a video scrapbook of Gamma Eta's history. It also includes information about the philanthropy, sisterhood and social aspects of the sorority .

A small summary video is also included for use in recruitment and other events .

The brochure will be used as a supplement to the DVD for recruitment or explanation purposes. The brochure breaks down the history and values of

Sigma Kappa, the financial aspect of being a member, as well as basic facts about the sorority . These two items will be used in recruitment or other information sessions for interested women or parents.

Author ' s Statement

History plays an important role in any organization. During the past year and a half, I have continuously been researching and combining information about Sigma Kappa's Gamma Eta chapter history. Knowing the history of an organization a i l lows for growth and development in future years. For my honors thesis , I decided to do a creative project that involved my sorority , Sigma Kappa , since the organization has influenced me and helped me become a better person . The final product is bro ' ken down to two parts : a DVD and a brochure .

The DVD will double as a video scrapbook that includes the history , philanthropies and other events of Sigma Kappa. The brochure will be used as a supplement to the DVD and includes a small summary of the history and values of Sigma Kappa , a f inancial break down of the financial aspect of being a member as well as facts about the sorority in general.

In my past four years at Ball State, many of my Journalism classes have stressed the importance of research. When I I started my Honors thesis, I knew that research would be a vital aspect to the project. I first utilized my knowledge of seconda , ry research by using my "Promise Book," which was given to me as a new member in Sigma Kappa. I also made many trips to National Headquarters to read articles from past "Triangle" magazines . My primary research consisted of interviews with alumnae and active members via phone, Internet and in person . I also talked with new members of Sigma Kappa to figure out what information would be beneficial for new members to know when searching for information about Sigma Kappa . This would allow my brochure to be created with information relevant to the needs of new members and any other interested people such as parents of new membe r s.

As a public relations and advertising double major, I have learned the importance of a positive public image for an organization. One of the main reasons I chose to create this DVD and brochure was to enhance the image of

Sigma Kappa . By having a compiled DVD filled with information about Sigma

Kappa, the organization can provide potential new members lots of facts and information up front. The brochure also helps the organization be transparent with its potential new members and interested parents of those women. It is also very important for active members and alumnae to be reminded of the history, philanthropies and other activities that Sigma Kappa participates in because they are all part of the Bond that connects all Sigma Kappa sisters .

Another reason I chose to do this project was to push myself creatively . In the public relations and advertising worlds, the more creative and adaptable a person is, the more likely they are to be hired . This project helped me broaden my education experience within my major because I used technology that is used in the lives of public relation and advertising professionals. Working on this project made me become familiar with videotaping, editing and all of the responsibilities that come with it. I also worked with computer programs that I was not familiar with such as iMovie and iDVD. The skil'ls I learned from this project are ones that I wi l li be able to add to my resume and continue to become proficient in.

4

~

The brochure portion of this project was fun because it was very representative of many things I learned in my Journalism classes. Many of the design classes I have taken the past four years helped me immensely when I was trying to fig'ure out the layout of the brochure . My classes talked about the importance of using white space, puHout quotes, and balancing . All of these skills, as well as others, helped me to make the brochure visua"'y pleasing as well as informative. I also improved my InDesign skills during this project. These are skills that will be very helpful in my future career. I also became more familiar with Photoshop as I edited pictures for both the brochure and DVD.

The breakdown of the DVD was done in a specific way so that everything would be easily understood and could be shown as a whole, or as separate sections. First, the main screen has two sections, "Welcome to LK" and

"Gamma Eta's History." The "Welcome to LK" is a short video summary of Sigma

Kappa . This can be used as an introduction to Sigma Kappa for interested participants or potentially as a recruitment tool. The "Gamma Eta's History" takes viewers to another screen where it is broken down , into smaller sections including a history section, philanthropy section, sisterhood section, social section and

" What is LK?" section. There is also a "Play All " button on this screen. The breakdown of these sections is clearly labeled according to the content. The section titled "What is LK?" is a representation of what Sigma Kappa means to some of the members.

Each of the sections is paired with a specific song. Many of the songs have been used as recruitment tools in the past. Some of the songs were used because of their meaning'ful lyrics . But, most of the songs are used as backg'round music to keep the video interesting' and the audience alert. The pictures were all given to me by alumnae or were in past new member books that were at the house.

Both the DVD and brochure that I have created will be used for recruitment. They will enable potential new members or parents interested in finding out more about Sigma Kappa to have a quick and easy reference. I have enjoyed working with my sisters and alumnae to find out more of our chapter ' s history . And, I am proud to say that I am a Sigma Kappa .

HISTORY SCRIPT

COLBY COLLEGE IN WATERVILLE, MAINE, WAS THE FIRST COLLEGE IN

NEW ENGLAND TO ADMIT WOMEN ON AN EQUAL BASIS WITH MEN

STUDENTS . THE FIRST WOMAN STUDENT WAS ADMITTED IN EIGHTEEN

SEVENTY-ONE , AND FOR TVVO YEARS MARY CAFFREY LOW WAS THE

ONLY WOMAN STUDENT AT COLBY COLLEGE. IN EIGHTEEN-SEVENTY

THREE, FOUR YOUNG WOMEN ELIZABETH GORHAM HOAG, IDA FULLER ,

FRANCES MANN, AND LOUISE HELEN COBURN WERE ADMITTED TO

COLBY AND THE FIVE YOUNG WOMEN FOUND THEMSELVES

FREQUENTLY TOGETHER. DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR OF EIGHTEEN

SEVENTY-THREE, THE FIVE YOUNG WOMEN DECIDED TO FORM A

LITERARY AN D SOCIAL SOC I ETY. THEY BEGAN WORK DURING THAT

YEAR WITH AN EAGER GLOW OF ENTHUSIASM. THEIR PURPOSE AT THE

OUTSET WAS THAT THE SORORITY SHOULD BECOME WHAT IT IS NOW , A

NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF COLLEGE WOMEN . ON NOVEMBER NINTH,

EIGHTEEN-SEVENTY-FOUR, THE FIVE YOUNG WOMEN RECEIVED A

LETTER FROM THE FACULTY A P PROVING THE PE T IT 1 0N. THUS, THIS

DATE HAS SINCE BEEN CONSIDERED OUR FOUNDERS ' DAY.

EIGHTY YEARS LATER, SIGMA KAPPA CAME TO THE BALL STATE

CAMPUS.

OUR CHAPTER IS RICH IN HISTORY . ORIGINALLY, SIGMA KAPPA MERGED

WITH ANOTHER SORORITY ON BALL STATE ' S CAMPUS, PI ZETA. PI ZETA

11

\..

WAS THE OLDEST ESTABLISHED SORORITY ON THE CAMPUS HAVING

BEEN FOUNDED IN NINETEEN-TWENTY. IN NINETEEN-FIFTY-TWO PI ZETA

WAS THE ONLY LOCAL SORORITY THAT DID NOT HAVE A NATIONAL

AFFILIATION. AS A RESULT, MEMBERSHIP WAS DECLINING. THE

ORGANIZATION FELT THAT IT WOULD BE BEST TO MERGE WITH A

NATIONALLY KNOWN SORORITY. THE GROUP'S PRESIDENT, LOIS

PERIGO , HELD A MEETING WITH OTHER PI ZETAS WHERE IT WAS

UNANIMOUSLY VOTED ON TO BECOME A COLONY OF SIGMA KAPPA. ON

OCTOBER EIGHTEENTH, NINTEEN-FIFTY-THREE, MEMBERS OF PI ZETA

PLEDGED SIGMA KAPPA OFFICIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME. AFTER THE

PLEDGING CEREMONY, BERNICE GARTRELL, A SIGMA KAPPA

TRAVELING SECRETARY, SPENT TIME WITH THE NEW COLONY TO

TEACH THEM ABOUT RECRUITMENT AND PLEDGESHIP. AFTER THREE

RUSH PARTIES, FIFTEEN MORE GIRLS PLEDGED SIGMA KAPPA. FORMAL

INITIATION OF THE CHAPTER AND MEMBERS INTO THE GRAND CHAPTER

OF SIMGA KAPPA WAS HELD ON MARCH TWENTIETH, NINETEEN-FIFTY

FOUR. SOME MEMBERS AND ALUMNAE OF IU AND PURDUE'S CHAPTERS

CAME TO HELP WITH INITIATION AS WELL.

DURING THIS TIME, ALL GREEK ORGANIZATIONS MET IN CLASSROOMS

AROUND THE BALL STATE'S CAMPUS, PRIMARILY IN THE ARTS

BUILDING. WHEN WOODWORTH HALL WAS BUILT, EIGHT SUITES WERE

CREATED FOR SORORITIES, HOWEVER, SIGMA KAPPA WAS NOT

CHOSEN TO HAVE ONE OF THEM. A ROOM IN THE BASEMENT OF LUCINA

12

~

WAS OFFERED TO OUR GAMMA ETA CHAPTER INSTEAD . SIX YEARS

LATER, IN NINETEEN-SIXTY , DEHORITY DORMITORY WAS BUILT AND

SIGMA KAPPA WAS FINALLY ABLE TO MOVE INTO A SUITE IN DEMOTTE

HALL. ALUMNAE OF THE CHAPTE R HELP ED FURNISH THE SUITE TO HELP

THE WOMEN FEEL RIGHT AT HOME.

IN NINETEEN-SEVENTY-THREE , OUR GAMMA ETA CHAPTER HAD THE

OP P O R TUNITY TO HOST SIGMA KAPPA STATE DAY. MEMBERS FROM

SIGMA KAPPA FROM AROUND INDIANA CAME TO THE EVENT TO

STRENGTHEN THEIR SISTERHOOD BOND. THE EVENT WAS HELD IN THE

ANDERSON SENIOR CITIZEN'S COMMUNITY CENTER WITH A THEME OF

"PEACE, LOVE, UNDERSTANDING AND LIVING IN HARMONY." THE DAY

IINCLUDED BREAKFAST, A GEN E RAL BUSINESS MEETING AND

ROUNDTABLES. RUSH TECHNIQUES, PLEDGE TRAINERS, MONEYMAKING

IDEAS AND PHILANTHROPIES WERE JUST A FEW O F THE TOPICS

DISCUSSED DUR ' iNG THE DAY.

OUR CHAPTER IN THE EIGHTYS WAS ONE OF LOTS OF FUN AND

EXCITEMENT. IN NINE T EEN-EIGHTY-THREE, OUR CHAPTER CELEBRATED

FOUNDERS' DAY WITH A SPAGHETTI DINNER, WON FIRST PLACE IN THE

FLOAT DIVISION OF HOMECOMING AND HAD A MEMBER CROWNED

D ERBY DAY QUEEN . ' IN NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FIVE GAMMA ETA SISTERS

TOOK PART IN TWO FUNDRAISING EVENTS . ONE WAS A TWENTY FOUR

HOUR TRAMP-A-THON WITH THE MONEY BEING DONATED TO

HANDICAPPED SERVICES AT BAl.L STATE.

13

\..

IN THE LATE NINETYS , GAMMA ETA SISTERS BECAME THE PIONEERS OF

THE " SOBER SISTER " PAGING PROGRAM THAT WAS ADOPTED BY MANY

SORORITIES ON CAMPUS. HOMECOMING CELEBRATIONS AND OTHER

CAMPUS EVENTS ALSO KEPT MEMBERS OF OUR SORORITY BUSY.

WHEN THE NEW MILLENNIUM ROLLED IN , SIGMA KAPPA WAS READY

FOR ACTION . IN TWO-THOUSAND-FOUR, OUR CHAPTER CELEBRATED

ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY WITH A BALL. THE EVENT WAS HELD

NOVEMEBER SIXTH AT THE HORIZON CONVENTION CENT E R IN

DOWNTOWN MUNCIE. THE DINNER STARTED AT FOUR WITH THE

CELEBRATION AND PRESENTATION OF FIFTY YEAR PINS FOLLOWING .

DANCING AND MORE FUN CAME LATER. THE CHAPTER AND ALUMNAE

HAD A GREAT TIME WITH NUMEROUS PEOPLE IN ATIENDANCE,

INCLUDING SIX OF THE ORIGINAL GAMMA ETA SISTERS.

OUR CHAPTER WAS ALSO ONE OF THE LUCKY SORORITIES TO BE GIVEN

A HOUSE ON BALL STATE'S CAMPUS IN TWO-THOUSAND EIGHT. THE

HOUSE WAS A THREE BEDROOM, TWO BATHROOM HOUSE WITH A

LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN AND BASEMENT THAT COULD BE USED FOR

GROUP ACTIVITIES. THE HOUSE IS STILL LIVED IN TODAY BY THREE

SISTERS A YEAR AND HOLDS MUCH OF OUR CHAPTER ' S HISTORY IN IT.

IN TWO-THOUSAND-ELEVEN, SIGMA KAPPA WAS HONORED DURING

GREEK WEEK AT BALL STATE FOR BEING A FIVE-STAR SORORITY.

14

~

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR SIGMA KAPPA? ONLY TIME WILL

TELL. AS THE NUMBER OF OUR MEMBERS CONTINUES TO GROW EACH

YEAR , OUR TRADITIONS AND VALUES REMAIN THE SAME . SIGMA KAPPA

HAS AND ALWAYS WILL OFFER WOMEN THE CHANCE TO JOIN THE

MYSTIC BOND AND LIVE ONE HEART, ONE WAY.

[KELL Y CLIP]

WHEN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE WAS APPROVED BY THE CONVENTION OF

NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR AS A NEW FOCUS OF SIGMA KAPPA'S

PHILANTHROPY , IT WAS A NATURAL COMPANION TO OUR MEMBERS'

PREVIOUS WORK WITH GERONTOLOGY. IN SUPPORT OF SIGMA KAPPA'S

COMMITMENT TO FINDING A CURE FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE,

CHAPTERS BEGAN SELLING LOLLIPOPS IN THE FALL OF NINETEEN

EIGHTY-FOUR TO RAISE MONEY FOR RESEARCH . SINCE THE INITIAL

GIFT OF FIVE-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO THE ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND

RELATED DISORDERS ASSOCIAT I ON, SIGMA , KAPPA HAS BECOME ONE

OF THE WORLD ' S LARGEST CONTRIBUTORS TO ALZHE ' IMER'S DISEASE

RESEARCH IN THE WORLD .

THE SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION WAS R ECOGNIZED AS A "PARTNER IN

PROGRESS" BY THE NATIONAL ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION AND

DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING ELSE TO CELEBRATE THEIR INVOLVEMENT

AND IT IS NOW A TRADITION THAT WE HAVE A WEEK LONG PROGRAM

WITH VARIOUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SIMGA KAPPAS TO GIVE BACK TO

THE COMMUNITY .

MOST RECENTLY THE SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION HAS STARTED THE

"ULTRA VIOLET CAMPAIGN ." THIS CAMPAIGN RAISES MONEY FOR THE

SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION AND IN TURN SPLITS THE MONEY RAISED

INTO ALL OF SIGMA KAPPA ' S PHI I LANTHROPIES. A FEW YEARS AGO

18

~

THERE WAS A PUSH TO ALLOW CHAPTERS TO DO WHATEVER THEY

WANTED TO DO TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION.

CHAPTERS AROUND THE WORLD CAN NOW USE THE ULTRA VIOLET

CAMPAIGN TO RAISE MONEY HOWEVER THEY LIKE. FROM LOLLIPOP

SALES TO SILENT AUCTIONS, EACH CHAPTER CAN PERSONALIZE THE

WAY THEY RAISE MONEY.

OUR CHAPTER HAS STARTED A TRADITION OF BADLE OF THE SEXES.

STARTING IN TWO-THOUSAND-TEN, GAMMA ETA HAS HAD MEN

COMPETE AGAINST WOMEN TO FIND OUT WHO THE BEDER SEX IS IN A

GAME OF WITS, SKILL AND FUN .

[EMIL Y CLIP]

IN TWO-THOUSAND-ELEVEN, WE HAD THIRTEEN TEAMS PARTICIPATE

AND RAISED OVER FIVE-HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THE FOUNDATION.

PHILANTHROPY CONTINUES TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SIGMA
