Minutes
Agenda item: Address by Dean Grant
Discussion:
Dean Grant spoke on two issues and asked two questions.
(1) Enrollment: Enrollment numbers across the College departments are strong, and growth in CCPS made it possible
for GVSU to make its enrollment goals. Total student credit hours for Fall (with comparison to last Fall) are::
SPNHA: 3,418 (+5.9%)
SCJ 7,930 (+8.6%)
HTM 3,810 (+0.8%)
SSW 6,702 (+14.7%)
CCPS: 21,860 (+8.5%)
(2) Advising: There may be some changes in undergraduate advising procedures. A new committee (from Dean's
Council) would share in oversight of advising has been proposed. An increased role of faculty in undergraduate
advising has been proposed. The problems in advising that these initiatives are intended to address are not problems
that are evident in CCPS.
(3) The Dean then asked for the faculty to provide the biggest challenges the College faces and most important
initiatives that the College should be taking. (Time ran out before the last question was addressed.)
Greg asked about the role of certificates in the curriculum. Dean Grant believes certificate programs are legitimate and
important if they meet a need and build on the strengths of the program.
Rich asked about the implementation of Personnel Information Management System. Dean Grant reported that the
university has purchased Digital Measures and that it may be implemented for FARs and workplans in 2011 and for
tenure and promotion actions in 2012.
Mike asked about the availability of resources and the planning for faculty replacements. Dean Grant was optimistic
about the implementation of flexible budgeting
Agenda item: Kathy Agard’s retirement
Discussion:
Last week, Kathy Agard anounced she would retire in December as director of the Johnson Center (and as an SPNHA faculty
member) Faculty expressed sentiment that it was importance for a new JCP director to have faculty status within SPNHA. There
was concern that the new director might not have appropriate academic credintials or an interest in the field of nonprofit
education.
Agenda item: New Faculty Recruiting
Discussion:
The language for the posting was reviewed. The following is baded on the discussion:

Agenda item: MPA Curriculum
Discussion:
Mark stressed that courses being taught as PA680s need to be submitted for catalogue approval. Also, all courses should have
a “home” in one of the concentrations and courses that are not getting good enrollments should be dropped. Below is an
example of what this might look like … Revised based on the discussion: (Courses in italic are new courses or courses with a
name/content change.)
