Reflections of their identity in the US About 35 students gathered at the Multicultural Center on Wednesday, September 15th to dialogue about Latino/a and Hispanic identity. The event started with a fun icebreaker. Students had to guess where famous artists and singers were from just by looking at their picture. They soon realized that Latinos are from diverse backgrounds and can appear to be something they are not. Latinos come in all shades, they have different colored eyes and hair, and speak in different dialects. Students also asked questions and shared common stereotypes that people think about the Latino/a community. Through dialogue the students were able to break these stereotypes and learn about the Latino Community. Here are is a fun fact learned: Students meet to dialogue about common Latino/a identity Stereotype: Latinas are sexy and seductive. Fact: Although American media has portrayed Latinas this way, Latina women value modesty and are no more sensual than any other woman. Heritage Film Series: Crossing Arizona The recent Arizona immigration law has caused an significant amount of controversy in the United States. In order to challenge students and have them dialogue about the subject, the Multicultural Center decided to show the documentary Crossing Arizona. The program was held in Pruis Hall on Wednesday, September 29th at 7pm. Although this documentary was released in 2006, it does an excellent job in examining both sides of the immigration debate. It presents both the political and humanitarian side of the argument. Students were able to hear the perspective of farmers who are angered by the destruction of their property, as well as see and hear the stories of people who are willing to risk their lives and cross a desert to help their families. “Nobody derserves to die in the dessert for a cup of water” Mike Wilson Happy Independence Day!
