In an effort to get students to speak out, the Multicultural Center hosted their monthly perspectives discussion on Wednesday October 20th at 3:00pm on the GLBTQ Community. Deona Hatley, a graduate student from the Student Affairs in Higher Education program, led an engaging discussion on the struggles that this community faces. community. Together they dialogued about ways to help the GLBTQ on campus. Let’s test your knowledge! Do you know what each color of a rainbow flag represents? Hot pink– Sexuality Red– Life Orange– Healing Yellow– Sun Green– Nature Blue– Art Indigo– Harmony Violet– Spirit Students were able to learn a lot of the terms used amongst the GLBTQ Do you know what the pink triangle symbolizes? This symbol was began prior to WWII and was used during concentration camps. Homosexuality was prohibited in Germany and gay prisoners were labeled with pink triangles. It was a symbol of hate that now stands for pride. The GLBTQ use this symbol as reminder of the inhumanity they have faced but as also as encouragement to keep fighting for their rights. Heritage Film Series: Laramie Project It is shocking and heart moving to watch films like the Laramie Project (2002). The film is based off a true story of a young college student named Matthew Shepard who was murdered because he was homosexual. Matthew was not only severely beaten, but he was left to die while being tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Stories like these are a great way to spark discussion. That is why the Multicultural Center decided to show this film on Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00pm in Pruis Hall. Students were given the opportunity to watch the film and engage in dialogue afterwards. This tragic event at Laramie caused an uproar all over the United States and abroad. People came together to support Matthew in his final days. Although what happened to Matthew is inhumane, some good came out of it. Matthew has become an example and an inspiration to the GLBTQ community. New Graduate Assistant: Cecilia O.
