Amazing Taste: International Festival
Come Visit Us!
Each year Ball State University hosts a
program called International Fest. This
is an opportunity for international
students to share their culture with
other students at Ball State. However,
this year different departments decided
to join together and make it an enormous and exciting event. They called it
the Amazing Taste.
Inside this issue:
Perspectives
Over 2,000 students attended the event,
which took place on Thursday, October
14th from 5pm—8:30pm. It was held at
the lawn between DeHority and
Woodworth Complex. Students, faculty,
staff and guests were able to enjoy a
selection of over 50 international dishes.

This year’s theme was International
Airport and students received a passport
which allowed them to travel the world
by visiting different tents. Each tent had
food from multiple countries. Also,
International students had booths set up
inside the tents to teach others about
their culture. Additionally, students wore
traditional clothing and celebrated their
cultures with all those in attendance.
There were a total of five tents at
Amazing Taste: the Asian tent, the
Africa, Middle East and Eurasia tent, the
Europe tent, and lastly the America’s
tent. It was incredible to see the number
of students that attended Amazing Taste.
Some international students expressed
their excitement for the event and felt that
the University was proactive about doing
educational events for American students
become educated about different cultures.
Aside from tasty authentic foods, there was
also music,
performances,
and activities
for the students.
Some of these
included hair
braiding, henna
tattoos, belly
dancing, and a
Salsa group
from Indianapolis. The night ended with
dancing and celebration.
Thank you Ball State University Dinning,
Rinker Center for International Programs,
University Program Board, and the
Multicultural Center Staff for sponsoring
such an amazing and successful event!

Perspectives Discussion: GLBTQ Awareness
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer (GLBTQ) issues are
a topic that a lot of people feel uncomfortable talking about. In an effort to get students to speak out, the
Multicultural Center hosted their
monthly perspectives discussion on
Wednesday October 20th at 3:00pm
on the GLBTQ Community. Deona
Hatley, a graduate student from the
Student Affairs in Higher Education
program, led an engaging discussion
on the struggles that this community
faces.
community. Together they dialogued
about ways to help the GLBTQ on
campus. Let’s test your knowledge!
Do you know what each color of a
rainbow flag represents?
Hot pink– Sexuality
Red– Life
Orange– Healing
Yellow– Sun
Green– Nature
Blue– Art
Indigo– Harmony
Violet– Spirit
Students were able to learn a lot of
the terms used amongst the GLBTQ
Do you know what the pink triangle
symbolizes?
This symbol was began
prior to WWII and was
used during
concentration camps.
Homosexuality was prohibited in
Germany and gay prisoners were
labeled with pink triangles. It was a
symbol of hate that now stands for
pride. The GLBTQ use this symbol as
reminder of the inhumanity they
have faced but as also as
encouragement to keep fighting for
their rights.
Heritage Film Series: Laramie Project
It is shocking and heart moving to watch
films like the Laramie Project (2002). The
film is based off a true story of a young
college student named Matthew Shepard
who was murdered because he was
homosexual. Matthew was not only
severely beaten, but he was left to die
while being tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming.
Stories like these are a great way to spark
discussion. That is why the Multicultural
Center decided to show this film on
Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00pm in
Pruis Hall. Students were given the
opportunity to watch the film and
engage in dialogue afterwards.
This tragic event at Laramie caused an
uproar all over the United States and
abroad. People came together to support
Matthew in his final days. Although
what happened to Matthew is inhumane,
some good came out of it. Matthew has
become an example and an inspiration to
the GLBTQ community.
New Graduate Assistant: Cecilia O. Macias
Cecilia Ofelia Macias
is currently a graduate
student in the Student
Affairs in Higher
Education program.
She did her
undergraduate studies
at the University of
Illinois at Urbana
Champaign in Communication. Cecilia has
an interesting story, she was born in Atlanta,
Georgia but quickly moved to Aguascalientes,
Mexico. After several years she returned to
the United States and grew up on the south
side of Chicago.
Cecilia has several passions in life.
One of those passions is singing.
Cecilia has performed in several
occasions and has been part of
choirs and acapella groups. She is
also fluent in Spanish and is
Mexican Honduran.
She is grateful to be working as a
graduate assistant at the
Multicultural Center and is loving
her time at Ball State University.
Please stop by her office and say
hello. She loves to speak Spanish,
so those of you who want to
practice, give her a visit!
One interesting fact about Cecilia
is that she has two set of twin
brothers, one identical and one
fraternal.
One thing she hopes to bring to the
Multicultural Center are programs
that will truly challenge and
motivate students. She hopes to
learn from others as well as share
her experience with students on
campus.
