Question: What is your coaching philosophy?
Q: Who do you see making an impact on the squad
this season?
Randy Heisler: My coaching philosophy reflects back
on me specifically as an athlete, and the coaches who
worked with me. It is to do the things in life and in the
sport which allow you to simply be the best you can be.
If you do those things as a self motto, then I believe
success and performance take care of themselves.
RH: We redshirted a number of our team members
last year with the thought of letting them develop. At
the top of the list would be Janae Taylor. Janae could
be a factor for us on a lot of levels. She could score
major points for us at the MAC Championship in the
60, the 200 and possibly as a leg on the 4x400 relay.
Q: What is one thing you are trying to accomplish with She is definitely someone we are going to count on.

We have freshman Rebecca Lomax who is going
RH: We have won more MAC individual titles in the to be a multi-event athlete for us. She won her first
last four to five years then most of the other league collegiate meet for us at Bowling Green, and was

and is probably our strongest overall thrower. We have
expectations for her to place in the weight indoor.
Q: Who are you looking to as leaders?
Q: Why do your student-athletes choose Ball State?
RH: We have distance runners, sprinters, hurdlers and
multi-event athletes that have really risen to the top RH: I have found that most of our student-athletes
as far as their leadership and roles within the team. choose Ball State for their academic interests. They

they are going to be working and using their degree.

A 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 4x400meter relay and a World Record holder in the 440yard dash, Sunder Nix enters his fifth season as
the assistant track and field coach at Ball State
University.
“To have the opportunity to have someone
of Sunder Nix’s caliber on our staff here at Ball
State shows the commitment the University has
for track & field,” said Ball State head coach
Randy Heisler. “Sunder’s credentials speak for
themselves. He was an Olympic gold medalist,
and one of the fastest 400 meter runners of all
time. His experiences and knowledge of sprinting,
and track & field in general, are a huge asset to
the Ball State program. He knows how to win and
how to train to be successful.”
In his previous four seasons with the Cardinals,
Nix has helped mentor Ball State’s sprinters and
hurdlers to 11 MAC individual titles. In addition,
BSU’s sprinters and hurdlers have made three
appearances at the NCAA Championships, with
Amber Williams becoming the latest NCAA AllAmerican in program history after her 15th-place
effort in the 60m hurdles at the 2007 NCAA
Outdoor Champions.
During the 2010 season, Nix helped coach
Katie Johnson to her second career MAC outdoor
title in the 100m hurdles, with her time of 13.71
in the finals earning her First Team All-MAC
accolades. The effort was also an NCAA East
Regional qualifying mark. Johnson also finished
as the runner-up in the 60m hurdles at the MAC
indoor championships, while Jenna Schmitmeyer
placed second in the 400m hurdles at the MAC
outdoor meet.

LaTasha Jenkins posted a time of 22.29
seconds -- the fourth-fastest time by a
college athlete in track and field history and
an American collegiate record at the time
-- as she sprinted to the NCAA national
championship in the 200-meter dash June
6, 1999. She became BSU’s first national
champion in women’s track and field. Two
weeks later, Jenkins finished second in the
200 to Olympic medalist Marion Jones with
a time of 22.36 at the USA Track and Field
Championships. She was also featured in
“Faces in the Crowd” in the June 28, 1999
issue of Sports Illustrated (See Below).
