2. Additions to agenda –
a. Follow up on creating documentation to support the use of various tools available to
students and researchers such as SAS and R. ATLAS has done some preliminary work in this
area but are now at a stand-still until they get a definition of “text mining” from Harriett
Green. Karen will reach out to Harriett to get her definition of “text mining”.
3. Announcements
a. James provided an update on the geo portal collaboration effort among CIC partners. The
University of Illinois has committed to this pilot project for 3 years (at $15/year). This project
is primarily producing a metadata gateway or data portal to allow CIC institutions to
discover what others have and try to figure out how they might be able to use the data. Any
one from any discipline that has GIS data can contribute. The actual data storage will be the
responsibility of each participating institution. University of Minnesota is taking the lead on
the project.
b. The Stats & Data group of ATLAS is moving to CITL as of August 16th. Things are still in flux
but it appears they will be focusing on data and surveys and taking a step back from stats.
More info to come as things unfold.
4. Discussion of partnership possibilities between CITL and the Scholarly Commons
Karen has been having conversations with various parties regarding how CITL and Scholarly Commons
might work together more. Perhaps the shift of the Stats & Data group to CITL will reinforce this
collaboration between CITL and the Library.
5. Update on 2014 data purchase program and planning for 2015
Karen noted that with her increased responsibilities within the Scholarly Commons she will need to shift
some of her vendor negotiating efforts around the data purchase program to other committee
members. Karen will create documentation about how she negotiates price agreements and will work
with other committee members to determine the best process for keeping the program on target.
