________________________________________________________________
For the past week the 12 girls on the freshman team, 10 girls on JV, and the 16 on varsity have gathered in the main gym at
Eastview High School to play basketball.
The common goal of the girls is to do your
best and run hard. Everyday during practice the girls do shooting drills, play a game
that is called 11-man, running, conditioning,
three-on-three, and knockout. The team is
practicing their court strategies during practice especially hard this week due to the
upcoming Girls Basketball Thanksgiving
Tip-off that is coming up on Saturday, November 24 th . The Girls Basketball team at the
Thanksgiving Tip-off will scrimmage against
each other in the Main Gym. The basketball
girls’ parents as well as any other interested
students or spectators will have the opportunity to watch the Eastview Girls’ Basketball team work their magic on the court. This
game on November 24th will be the girls’
chance to show how much commitment and
determination they have for the game of basketball. It is a great opportunity to see how
Eastview High School’s girls basketball program is progressing throughout the
years.The dedication and determination the
girls have to the game is clearly seen on their
faces as they practice everyday under the
supervision of their coaches Schaffer,
Bierlein, Coulthart, Goetz, Olsen. Everyday

the girls are pushed to play their best and
keep focused on the game. Like many other
sports basketball is a game that requires mental concentration as well as superior physical capability. The team takes care to keep
that a constant advantage in the game. Everyday the girls are split up into teams during practice so that they can scrimmage hard
against each other to get better at the game,
run through the plays, and perfect defense
strategies so that the 2001-2002 basketball
season can be an excellent one.
The entire team hopes for a successful
season this year. To have a great season the
team must come together and work hard for
the future games that are quickly coming up.
Junior Justine Allen states that, “our goals
are to improve working as a team, have lots
of fun, win, and to do our best.” She believes that the basketball team will go far with
the continued effort and motivation to win.
The girls’ drive to play well is strong; this is
evident in the daily practice that they all faithfully attend. The drive to play well is strong
because the girls’ desire to win is
so resolute.
The motivation to win is what will help
the girls play great on Thanksgiving weekend. The Thanksgiving Tip-off will be an
exciting event that will keep everyone on his
or her toes. This will be a great event to
attend if you want to have non-stop heartthumping fun! Not only that but according
to Justine Allen “It’s a good place to show
your school spirit!”

Hopes For New Season

The 2000-2001 Boys Hockey team defied
the odds and made it to its first state tournament last year, winning the conciliation
championship for the first time in school
history. But for players and coaches, last
season is nothing but a pleasant memory,
and a goal to try and improve on this season. “Playing at Excel (Energy Center) was
nerve racking in the beginning,” said senior goalie Orlando Alamano, “but it gave
us the experience we will need this year.”
Experience is one obstacle the Lightning will have to overcome this season.
“We lost 10 players from last year, nine
seniors and Cody Blanshan,” said Coach
Gibbons. Blanshan, who would be a senior, left to play junior hockey in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota. Says Gibbons: “We need everyone. For us to be successful, we need
everybody to play well.” Playing well this
season may be because of the work put in by
players during the off season. “We have been
in the weight room a lot this summer, Super
Group, and in STP (Summer Training Program),” says Captain Adam Bressler.
“We have also played in a couple summer
tournaments, where we were successful, we
won them both. We lifted weights, shot
pucks, skated, and worked in the classroom,”
added Gibbons. “They worked really hard”.
The guy’s hard work will only benefit them
this season, in their quest to return to state.
But the memories from last year won’t be
gone from their minds. “Sections and state
were far and away the best part of last season,” says the coach. “How do you beat that?
You can’t beat that.”

music through suggestions from all team
members, and the team captains get together
and choreograph the dance moves to fit the
music.
In order to pull off the type of high quality
show they put together, the Dance Team must
perform as a single unit.
At the core of this team unity lies a group
of dancers that have been together since their
freshman year. However this does not mean
that incoming dancers are of no importance.
The rigorous tryouts help to select a new
group of freshman dancers that will be team
members for years to come.
Ashley Keeler comments, “This year is
going very well and our team has improved
tremendously. We have really high hopes”.
This year’s Lightning Dance Team has
delivered wonderful performances at all of
their shows at Eastview High School’s fine
athletic stadium.
This large commitment has paid off
through good team relationships and bonding, which produce a well-balanced delivery of the show. As you may remember,
two years ago the team won 1 st place in
state, and last year’s team, although undergoing a rebuilding year, took 5 th in the high
kick and 6 th in the jazz funk category.
Team member Ali Jacobson reflects this
year’s optimism,
“Everyone has
hope and high expectations as we
look forward to
what should be an
outstanding year
for the team.”
This good team
attitude compliments the high-energy show chosen
for this year. The

unity and leadership
are crucial to the success of all sports teams.
Team unity is the backbone for every
sports team. In football the players must rely
on each other to protect them from opponents, in cross-country every runner must
run well in order for the team to place well,
and in wrestling each weight class must produce wins in order for the team to see wins.
This desire to perform for the team is where
unity becomes so important. The adversity
brought on by conflicting goals is what can
destroy a team’s success.
This unity comes from strong leadership.
Captains are the strings that link players to
coaches, and that tie up any problems from
the start. The jobs of captains are endless.
They are responsible for motivation, communication, and damage control.
A team without good leadership can’t have
the unity that produces performance out on
the playing field. Many high school sports
teams are sacrificing this senior leadership in
order to build programs for the future. What
does this future mean though if every senior
class is cut for developing underclassmen?
A team’s success is not solely determined
by the athletic abilities of the player’s on each
team. Everything off the field, and everything
on the field builds a teams character. This is
what shines through in competition, and this
character is what separates the losers from
the champions. High school sports need to
take a look at the character they are building.

Frustration and Threat

With the disappointing news of the
Twins’ possible departure, and the Vikings poor performances, many Minnesota sports fans have overlooked
the success of the Timberwolves this
season. With a 6-1 record, they are
ranked first in the Midwest.
This success isn’t a complete surprise. With key players such as Kevin
Garnett, the Timberwolves are showing promise. Ranked #6 in the NBA
for rebounds per game, Garnett is leading the team to victory. Earlier this
month he scored an impressive 37
points at Houston.
Terrell Brandon is also a driving
force for Minnesota. He is ranked #1
in the NBA for free throws and in the
top three for steals per game.
This success hasn’t come without a
price; William Avery, Tom Hammonds
and Maurice Evans are all on the injured list.
Wally Szcerbiak’s recent performances have helped the T-Wolves
gain even more momentum. In the New
York game alone he scored an astounding 35 points.
Under the leadership of Garnett,
Brandon and Szcerbiak, the
Timberwolves have remained on top
of their game.
Their win at Milwaukee on November 10th, only added to the confidence
of the team. According to an interview on nba.com, Szcerbiak said, “We
beat one of the best teams in the East
tonight. We really sent a message to
the league.”
With the impressive stats and evident
leaders, the Timberwolves will continue to send a powerful message with
upcoming games against the Orlando
Magic and the Miami Heat.
Their outstanding performances are
a good alternative to the poor presentation of the Vikings this year.

TV SHOWS
continued from page 9
Dark Angel: The angel is back for its second
season. After an emotional first season, Max
is making her way back by escaping from
Mantecore and back to Logan. I think the one
thing that makes the love story in this show
believable is that it is real. The actors who
play Max and Logan are engaged off screen
and they fit together so well that its magic
shows through the television screen.

if they could pull off another season after
dropping Shannon Doherty, who played
Prue last season. Charmed has captured that
comical hint that it once held in the first season. After the last few shows, viewers are
ready to relearn magic with the new character Page. Quite frankly, it was falling-intolove stories and overly dramatic scenes that
people can find on any other show. I congratulate them on their bounce back, and on
making their way back onto my TV schedule.

the shine it once had. Now the show concentrates on Mac getting home more than
the initial plot that had compelled viewers to
watch in the first place.
