ROSEMOUNT HIGH SCHOOL AP Calculus (AB): 09-10 MR. PETERSON 651-683-6969 ext. 94479 Karl.Peterson@district196.org Course Description: Calculus AB is primarily concerned with developing the understanding of the concepts of Calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The course approaches Calculus from multiple perspectives: numeric, analytic, algebraic, and graphic. The connections among these representations are emphasized. Preparing students for the Advance Placement test is an important priority. Textbooks: Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic (Finney, Demana, Waits, Kennedy) with supplements from Calculus from Graphical, Numerical, and Symbolic Points of View (Ostebee/Zorn). Calculators: Classroom demonstrations will be done with TI-83 or TI-84. Other recommended calculators: TI-86 and TI-89. Course Outline: Chapter 1: Chapter 2: Chapter 3: Chapter 4: Chapter 5: Chapter 6: Chapter 7: Prerequisites for Calculus (1.1,1.2, Ostebee /Zorn 1.2) Limits and Continuity (2.1-2.4) Derivatives (3.1-3.7, Ostebee /Zorn 2.2,2.3) Applications of the Derivative (4.1-4.4,4.6) The Definite Integral (5.1-5.5, Ostebee /Zorn 5.1) Differential Equations and Math Modeling (6.1-6.4) Applications of the Definite Integral (7.1-7.4) Grading: Components AP Problem of the Week-10% Homework-10% Tests and Quizzes-70% Final-10% Scale 100-90: A 89-88: A87-86: B+ 85-80: B 79-78: B77-76: C+ 75-70: 69-68: 67-66: 65-60: 59-58: C CD+ D D- Homework: A nightly assignment will be given to complete before the next math class period. Each student will correct his or her own assignment in class. The assignment will be collected, reviewed by the teacher and returned. Each assignment should have name, date, page number, and problem numbers in an upper corner. Each assignment will be given a score out of a possible 5 points based on effort. Any late assignment will receive no more than two out of five possible points if turned in before the test covering the assignment. Any assignment turned in after the test covering the late assignment will be given one point. If the assignment is not properly corrected only three out of five points will be given. Quizzes Quizzes will be given periodically and may be in any of the following formats: open or closed notes, group or individual. Some of the quizzes covering basic skills of Calculus may require a minimum score in order to pass the quiz. If this minimum score is not achieved the quiz must be retaken until the minimum score is met. Tests Most tests are closed note chapter tests. Each chapter test will be have a review worksheet given prior to the test to help students prepare. Semester Finals Semester finals will be given at the end of trimester one and two. These finals will be made up of mostly past AP exam problems. A review worksheet will be given prior to the final to help students prepare. AP Problem of the Week Most weeks an AP Problem of the Week will be given. Most of these problems are free response problems from past AP Calculus tests. Students will be given varying lengths of time to complete the problems and turned in to be graded. These problems are extremely valuable in giving students insight into how the material they are learning in class will be presented on the AP test. Absences: For all absences, you are responsible to make up the worked missed. This means you need to ask a classmate, check on the assignment board in class, or go to my web page at: http://www.district196.org/rhs/faculty.cfm?id=211to find out your make up work. Additional Information: 1. All school rules on absences and tardies will be enforced.
