Student Council has been planning for Homecoming week since their meeting in mid-August. Planning has included voting on this year’s theme, “Take My Breath Away” as well as the activities that happened throughout the week. Student Council breaks both activities and special events into committees led by the most involved members of Pajama Day Even foriegn exchange student Ryota Matsuyama is excited. Monday night’s outdoor movie, Top Gun, was played on the side of the school with as many as 600 students attending, despite it being nothing like a hot summer night. Matt Jesse, Senior Homecoming royalty, said Top Gun is one of his favorite movies. “It was hard to see the movie at the beginning but by the end it was both easy to see and hear and it was really fun to just hang out with friends.” Tuesday night was the Soccer Sha-bang. When did Kiss the Pig start and how many different pigs have they had? “King candidates, you may turn around and find out who the king is!” Well, I was still hesitant. I looked over at Matt, who I saw begin to turn, and I followed. Ha, a little airplane. How cute. It was somewhat unusual for me, actually. I’ve been writing for this newspaper since I got to this school, and I’m even the captain of the math team (I’m proud of that, by the way!). I never could have expected that one day I’d be on that gym floor, having all my privacy invaded, as if 2500 people decided to look through my drawers (the furniture, not the clothing – okay, it sort of felt like both). It was like I starred in my own teen movie. Except in this case, I felt more respect towards my comrades who were up for the nomination, rather than the movies that would put me against the angry Johnny McFootball and the mischievous Preppy O’Connor. Immediately following this intense moment, there were hundreds of flashes from cameras, many congratulations, and an aching face from the broad smiling. Then it was over. Back to school for me. I’d rather not use this time to be an object of worship. What I’m getting at is to be motivation for any underdogs out there. You know who you are, and apparently all you need is a really cool beard to get yourself somewhere in life. I guess the one thing I learned from all of it was that some dreams can come true. Except the one where I fly to Africa and start my own nation. Have a great homecoming week, everybody! I hope to see you around school! The boys have been hampered by several key injuries and an unusually strong Lake Conference. Although involved in several close games, their efforts have yet to be rewarded with a conference win. But, in adherence to their annual motto “In Pursuit of Excellence,” the team believes this season can be used as a learning tool for future Eastview programs. The Lake Conference is a dominant force in Minnesota boys’ soccer, with three teams (Eden Prairie, Bloomington Jefferson, and Apple Valley) consistently listed in the Star Tribune’s top 10 rankings. The boys approached this season not intimidated by the abundance of power teams on their schedule and with a resolve to compete hard against all competitors. They have not backed down from their decision, playing allout to the final whistle and losing several heart-breakers by one goal. Strikers Mike Landerholm and Nathan Henry have provided much of the offense for the Lightning, each recording nine points (goals plus assists) over the course of the season. Despite Eastview’s struggles this year, the boys’ soccer program is poised for great successes in the future. Mr. Scott Gustafson took over as head coach after last season and the team has had to adjust to the new rules and ideas that he has brought to the program with the goal of moving the team to a higher level of competition. Coach Gustafson stressed physical conditioning this year and the summer practices reflected the team’s determination to enter the season more fit than their last fall campaign. Captains Nathan Henry, Mike Landerholm, and Scott Polansky acknowledge that the change has been difficult at times but agree that the new coach’s system will benefit the team in the long run. When asked about the future of Eastview soccer, Captain Henry says, “We really believe our team has a strong core of young players that will develop their skills over the summer.” All players hope that their team can return to the top of the state’s elite conference next year. The boys’ conference schedule ended on October 7th with a 2-0 loss against Bloomington Kennedy. The last game of the regular season takes place tomorrow night when they host Hudson for the last game of the regular season. They are still in contention for the state title because every team is guaranteed a chance for a playoff game no matter what their record is. While their chances for playoff success are low, the team looks forward to the opportunity. 1. “The Tradition Begins” Student Council CONTINUED from p. 1 by Tim DeBord Lightning Reporter Trivia before it even started.
