The objectives for this course are as follows: 1. Understand, discuss, and use the “scientific method” 2. Understand the characteristics that define “life” 3. Know the major categories of biological molecules and understand their significance in the cell 4. Understand and discuss human anatomy and physiology 5. Understand and discuss immunity and disease 6. Understand and discuss cancer biology 7. Understand and discuss human genetics Grading: Three Exams 60% (20% each) Tuesday Quizzes 20% Final Exam (comprehensive) 20% Grading Scale: A (90-100%); B+ (86-89%); B (80-85%); C+ (76-79%); C (70-75%); D+ (66-69%); D (60-65); F (0-59%) Policy for Portable Electronic Devices: The use of any portable electronic devices, including cell phones, pagers, MP3 players, iPods, etc., during class is not allowed for any reason unless prior approval has been given to a student from the instructor or unless required for the course. If you are planning to have any of these devices in class, they must be turned off and stowed away for the duration of the class period. If you use a portable electronic device during a test, quiz, or other assessment, you are eligible to receive a failing grade on that assignment. Attendance: Students are encouraged to be present at all lectures and labs. There will be no makeup quizzes. However, quizzes missed due to illness will be excused if documentation is provided. Tuesday Quizzes: During the semester, 14 lecture quizzes will be given. These quizzes will cover lecture and lab material presented during the previous lecture period. Exams: For each exam, students will need to bring a Scantron sheet, which can be purchased at the bookstore.
