Listed on the following pages you will Įnd performance, ultrasound, reproducƟve, and pedigree informaƟon, as well as EPDs on 60 bulls. All bulls
have been Merial SureHealthTM cerƟĮed, tested free of persistent BVD and their dams have tested free of Johnes. All bulls have undergone a complete reproducƟve and soundness exam to ensure that they are ready to go to work for you.
Bulls will sell in order by Overall Index. When you consider the amount of proven producƟon data that these bulls bring with them, you’ll realize
what value they can add to your herd, not only next year, but in years to come.
Make plans to be in Macomb at the WIU Livestock Center on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m.—buyer’s registraƟon will begin at 5 p.m. Please come early
to see the bulls and visit with the breeders. The Sigma Alpha sorority will also have a food stand open that evening with great eats like Rib Eye
sandwiches and homemade pies. We think that you will be impressed with this year’s set of bulls. Special thanks to our consignors for sending us a

Welcome to the 43rd Annual, Western Illinois University Performance Tested Bull Sale. As an Alumni of Western Illinois University, I’m proud to say
that I have been associated with the WIU Bull test for the past 29 years. I have personally seen this sale grow, to become one of the well-respected
performance bull tests within the Midwest.
It is also with excitement that I invite your aƩendance to and parƟcipaƟon in this years Sale that features, (60) powerful and documented bulls from
beef programs throughout the Midwest. These consignors/sellers are not only recognized on the regional level, but on the NaƟonal scene as well;
some have been parƟcipaƟng in this sale for decades.
The WIU bull test provides as much, if not more, documented data than any other bull test sale in the Midwest. This test has helped breeders to
idenƟfy those important proĮt making geneƟc markers and performance indicators; so that they can oīer and provide a documented premium
product. You can buy with conĮdence, knowing that the bulls are going to go out and work. For some families, it has become a tradiƟon for 2 and 3
generaƟons to purchase their herd sire at the WIU Bull Test Sale.
Analyze your cow herd and your calf crop to idenƟfy those traits in which you need improvement. Use the valuable data provided by the WIU Bull
Test to assist in picking your next herd sire that is needed to improve not only your calf crop, but your cow herd as well. Remember, the bull you
need may not be the same bull your neighbor needs to improve your boƩom line.

General Information—Sale Terms & Conditions
LOCATION: Western Illinois University Livestock Center.
SALE TIME: Buyer’s registration will begin at 5 p.m.
Sale will begin at 7 p.m.
BIDDING: Bidding will be by number. The auctioneer will
settle and render a final decision on any disputes pertaining
to bidding.
TERMS: Terms of sale are cash. CHECKS SHOULD BE
MADE PAYABLE TO THE LOWDERMAN AUCTION SERVICE. All
bulls must be paid for at the sale and before loading. All bulls
are the buyer’s risk as soon as sold. Announcements made
from the auction block will take precedence over the printed
material in this catalog.
BREEDING GUARANTEE: The bulls have been examined for
reproductive soundness by Dr. Jon Schar, our station
veterinarian, and found to be satisfactory potential breeders.
Should any bull not prove to be a satisfactory breeder within
one year of the sale, the seller reserves the right, for a period
of six months, to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder.
Should the bull fail to prove a satisfactory breeder in the
specified time period, the seller will refund the full settlement
in satisfaction of all claims. Complaints must be reported in
writing to the seller within one year of sale.

DIRECTIONS TO THE TEST STATION:
From the north, come into Macomb on Hwy. 67. At the north
edge of Macomb, just before you get to the city, turn right
(west) onto Tower Road at the sign that points the direction
to the WIU farm. Go one mile west and turn right (north) on
the first road that goes north. Go about half mile to the top
of the hill, turn right at the buildings, and the bull test station
is about a quarter mile straight ahead.
From the west, come into Macomb on Hwy. 136 and turn left
(north) onto Wigwam Hollow road at the first stop light
(there’s a Casey’s at that turn). Follow Wigwam Hollow Road
north through two curves and you’ll come to a T intersection
with Tower Road. Turn right (east) and then go back to the
north at the first road to the north (about 100 yards). Go
about half mile to the top of the hill, turn right at the
buildings, and the bull test station is about a quarter mile
straight ahead.
From the east and south, come into Macomb on either Hwy.
136 or 67(they join at the east edge of Macomb and become
Jackson St.), and follow Jackson through Macomb until
Highway 67 splits to the north. Go north on Hwy. 67 past the
Highway Patrol Station to Tower Road at the very north edge
of Macomb. Turn left (west) at the sign that points the
direction to the WIU Farm. Go one mile west and turn right
(north) on the first road that goes north. Go about half mile
to the top of the hill, turn right at the buildings, and the bull
test station is about a quarter mile straight ahead.
HEALTH: All bulls were tested for brucellosis within 30 days
of the sale. Additional health papers, acceptable in any
state, will be furnished at the expense of the buyer. All bulls
were MerialSureHealthTM certified coming on test and their
dams tested free of Johnes. All bulls were tested negative for
persistently infected (PI) BVD.
ABSENTEE BIDS: If you are unable to attend the sale and

Testing Information
FACILITIES: The bulls were housed in straw and stalk bedded 28’ x 80’ pens with a 28’ x 28’ shelter open to the south with a
maximum of 13 bulls per pen.
TESTING PERIOD:The bulls began their 112-day test on October 20, 2014 after a 21-day adjustment period and came off of test on
February 10, 2015.
RATION:
Bulls were fed a test ration that was 31.25% corn, 32.5% pelleted soybean hulls, 28.75% pelleted corn gluten feed, 2.5%
cottonseed hulls, and 5% vitamin-mineral premix with Rumensin. In addition, all were allowed access to round bales of grass hay.
ON AND OFF OF TEST WEIGHTS: The on test weight was the average of two consecutive weights taken on October 20 and 21,
2014. Off test weight was the average of two consecutive weights taken on February 9 and 10, 2015.
ADG: Average Daily Gain over the entire test period. The test group ratio is also provided.
INDEXES: Calculated as 70% ADG + 15% REA + 15%IMF. An overall index across all breeds was calculated to compare their
performance across breeds. A within breed index was calculated as well.
FRAME SCORE: Based on hip height and age at hip height measurement using the BIF guidelines.
PELVIC AREA: Measured in square centimeters and adjusted using BIF guidelines. This trait is correlated to the ease of calving of
a bull’s daughters.
SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: Measured in centimeters and adjusted using BIF guidelines. This trait is correlated to the bull’s semen
producing ability as well as the fertility and age of puberty of his offspring.
RUMP FAT & 12TH RIB FAT: Fat thickness in inches at the rump and between the 12th and 13th ribs measured using real-time
ultrasound and adjusted using breed association and BIF guidelines. Note that some breeds do not report rump fat.
RIBEYE AREA: Ribeye area in square inches between the 12th and 13th ribs measured using real-time ultrasound and adjusted using
breed association and BIF guidelines.
MARBLING: Marbling score estimated using real-time ultrasound and adjusted using breed association guidelines. Adjusted
percent intramuscular fat is converted to a potential quality grade using BIF guidelines.
EPDs: Expected progeny differences as provided by the respective breed associations. The traits for which EPD information provided
varies from breed to breed. Also, all animals of the same breed may not have information provided on all traits. The EPD’s should
only be used to compare bulls within the same breed. A more detailed explanation of EPDs is included later in this catalog.
GENETIC DEFECTS: All bulls in the sale are free of known genetic defects at the time of test registration, excluding the
Developmental Duplication (DD) condition.

Preconditioning Programs
Independent university research and practical field experience has confirmed the value in terms of overall animal profitability throughout
the beef production chain of an effective health preconditioning program. Progressive commercial producers are not capturing this
value, which buyers recognize and are willing to pay for. A documented health program is also an important component of many
TM
branded beef alliances that are also adding value to our product. Merial’s SureHealth program is a veterinarian certified and Merial
actively helps producers capture added value of their cattle. Thanks to Merial for their assistance in implementing the program and with
health related items, promotion of the sale, and for donating to the Sigma Alpha girls to assist with their food stand.
Understanding EPD's
An EPD is a prediction, based on available data, of what the animal is expected to transmit to its future offspring. EPD values are used to
compare animals; for example, the difference in EPD between two bulls is a prediction of the expected difference between the future
performance of progeny of the two bulls. Since an EPD predicts future progeny performance, it is regressed towards zero or a pedigree
value, depending on the heritability of the traits and on the amount, relationship and distribution of the information available. For
example, if Bull A has an EPD for weaning weight of 12 and Bull B has a weaning weight EPD of 27, then we would expect the calves sired
from Bull B to be about 15 pounds heavier at weaning than calves from Bull A, assuming the cows they breed are of equal genetic quality
to each other. EPD's simply provide a comparison between animals using all available data.
An EPD normally has an accuracy value printed with it which can vary from 0 to 1.0, based on the amount and type of data used to
predict the EPD. This accuracy provides the user with an indication of the likelihood of possible change in the EPD when more information
becomes available. For example, an EPD with an accuracy of 0.99 is not very likely to change when additional information becomes
available on the animal. But an accuracy of 0.02, for example, indicates that the EPD is not too reliable as it is likely to change when
additional information on more calves becomes available. Accuracies are not included in the catalog data as they are all rather small on
these bulls as they have not yet sired any progeny.
Not all breeds choose to get EPD's on all traits, thus you'll notice some difference in what EPD's are available on bulls of various breeds in
this catalog. While most traits are easily understandable, two that are sometimes a bit confusing are the different weaning traits and
calving ease traits. For weaning weight, three figures are usually included: weaning weight, milk (or maternal weaning weight), and total
maternal weaning weight. The weaning weight figure shows the genetic effect associated with the ability of the calf to grow. It is the
sire's direct genetic effect on weaning weight. The milk, or maternal weaning weight, has to do with how well the daughters of the bull
are expected to produce milk. It is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters, or, in
other words, that part of weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. The total maternal weaning weight is the sum of the
maternal weaning weight and 1/2 of the weaning weight. This index is the expected amount of pounds that a sire's daughters' calves will
differ from the breed average assuming the daughters are mated to sires of average genetic merit for weaning weight. A bull's calving
ease EPD relates calving ease of calves sired by the bull; while daughter's calving ease estimates how easily his daughters will give birth to
their calves.
Some breeds are now calculating economic indexes that allow comparison of a dollar value difference between calves sired by different
sires. These indexes can be used much like EPDs. In fact, they are calculated from EPDs by making certain assumptions about the
economic value of the contributing traits. The Angus breed, for example has the $F index (indicating value in the feedlot), $G (indicating
carcass value), and $B (indicating total feedlot and carcass value). If bull A has a $B index of $45.50 and bull B has a $B index of $30.50,
then bull A’s progeny (if mated to similar cows) should produce $15.00 more profit per head than bull B’s progeny when fed out and
marketed on a carcass grid program.
Management of the Yearling Bull
With proper care and management, your yearling bull can give you many years of good breeding performance. Adjusting to a new farm
and new ration is a very critical time. While the bulls have been fed a 22% roughage ration on test, most producers adapt them to a
higher roughage diet on their farm. It's important to remember that yearling bulls are still growing and will very likely lose some
condition during the breeding season. A good guideline to follow is to feed about one pound of grain per hundred pounds of body weight
with free-choice, high quality forage and free-choice of a quality salt and mineral mix. The bull should also be allowed a good pen size for
adequate exercise.
At breeding time, it is generally recommended that a yearling bull be turned in with not more than 20 cows in a fairly small pasture.
Exceeding this number of cows and forcing the bull to cover a large pasture with rough terrain may well lower the conception rate. And
certainly the yearling bull should be grouped only with bulls his own weight and age to reduce injury problems from fighting. If at all
possible, continue feeding some grain to the yearling bull through the breeding season to reduce his weight loss during this time.
Yearling bulls should also continue to grow through the next winter. During that time he should be fed 1/2 - 1 pound of grain per 100
pounds of body weight, plus free-choice quality roughage, salt and mineral. A parasite control program is also important.
