MARK 0. HATFIELD MARINE SCIENCE CENTER OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Newport, Oregon 97365 5296 Telephone 503 867-0100 Fax 503 867.0138 2030 S. Marine Science Drive Bitnet HMSCiORSTATE.BITNET 1990-1991 ANNUAL REPORT of the Hatfield Marine Science Center June 30, 1991 1990-91 year has provided us with adjusting to our expanded space in terms of the library and has allowed some effort to be put toward programmatic planning. Physical Plant After the extended construction period at the Center which involved plumbing and getting our sea water system operational with the computerized components, we have been attempting to get caught up with general maintenance. Part of the sea water plumbing involved complete cross plumbing with the new system, abandoning major components of our old system. We now have ample sea water in the original facility, which has been limited for years. As a result of the computerization of our system, we have excellent control over both salinity and temperature. During the past year we have paved the parking lot in front of the housing units and installed drains that eliminate the nearly lake-like conditions during the rainy season. The aquarium electrical system was made of 25-year-old corroded and extremely dangerous metal conduit. That electrical system was completely replaced using non-conductive conduits and appropriate safety measures. In addition, many parts of the aquarium service area suffering from wood rot have been replaced. The National Coastal Resources Research and Development Institute has moved from the east to the west wing of the main building in some of the space vacated by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA has yet to move from their laboratory space in the west wing, but they hope to be finished moving by the end of June. We are attempting to put together a financial package to allow renovation of the HVAC system throughout the entire original building. We hope this will be done this coming fall and will be included in next year's report. We plan to have an outside company do the renovation with a payback from the resulting energy savings. HMSC Annual Report 2 June 30, 1991 This past year a new fiber optic telephone system has been installed at the Center, making us officially part of the university telecommunications system. A fiber optic line has been connected from Corvallis to Waldport, with a T-1 line from Waldport to the Center. This should be also updated to fiber optics soon. Telecommunications on campus manages the system and handles billing. We are now part of the main campus Ethernet system and have removed the outdated statmux link. We are currently establishing the Ed Net system at the HMSC. We have laid conduits from the uplink and downlink dishes into the old library where we will have the control room for the distance learning system. Aquarium This past year we have hired Susan Pilling to replace Kathleen Heide. Susan comes to us from Catalina Island Marine Station where she was instrumental in the marine education programs. Susan obtained an Institute of Museum Services grant for $71,000, up from last year's award of $45,000. We are now able to hire an additional full-time marine educator who will work with school groups and our public education program. Our focus will be on establishing a long-range interpretive plan for the aquarium and upgrading our static exhibits. Our bookstore is operating very well under the management of Linda Vander Burgh. It is beginning to pay back its debt to Extension and is providing additional funds for aquarium programs. The IMS grant and bookstore funds have made it possible to hire four aquarium interns, two graphics interns and one communications/grant writing graduate research assistant for this summer. Our student aquarists have completed their degrees and we have two new graduate research assistants managing the aquarium: Jonathan Mee and Patrick Richardson. Jonathan is our senior aquarist and is a graduate student in Fisheries and Wildlife. He had experience operating an aquarium in Oman. Education Enrollment in our winter term fisheries program is up slightly from last winter. The spring marine biology course was also up. Our summer enrollment this past year was down, partly due to changing philosophy in the College of Education. This summer's enrollment is also being affected by the demise of the College of Education because of Measure 5. With the installation of our Ed Net send-and-receive site, we are hoping to send educational programming to a wide variety of audiences, from elementary level to teacher education to higher education. This past year Ed Net had its first exploratory program in marine biology. This was done with the help of Vicki Osis at the Center with the major teacher being Mr. Al Heide for a one-term high school level marine biology class. The production was done on the Corvallis campus and HMSC Annual Report 3 June 30, 1991 we hope to put such productions on right from the HMSC. Vicki Osis will be taking a sabbatical to visit England and its well-developed remote teaching programs to assist in our implementation. We are also working on additional marine biology programs in conjunction with Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Scholarship Awards This past year one Holt Marine Education award went to Vicki Osis and Dan Guthrie with their student Brady Phillips. Mr. Phillips has produced a guide to estuaries and a drift net fact sheet for use by teachers and the general public. An additional award went to Bruce Menge and his student Eric Berlow. Mr. Berlow is working on an ecology video for classroom use. Research Paul Reno and a number of the fish disease group are working on "Virulence Factors of Fish Pathogens," for $200,000, 1991-1993, with John Fryer and John Rohovec, principal investigators. In addition, Paul has a $50,000 grant from the Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center on "Fluorometric Immunoassay for Detection of Renibacterium salmoninarum." Paul was also the Alberta Medical Heritage Foundation Lecturer in May 1991. He spoke on "Comparison of Hematic Neoplasia of Bivalves and Monocytic Leukemia of Mammals." Dave Sampson has a Sea Grant project on "Models for Fish Harvest Technology and the Choice of Fishing Location" for $115,000, 1991-1993 and one from Oregon Otter Trawl on "Assumption of Constant Fishing Selectivity and Stock Assessment for Widow Rockfish" for three months in 1991 ($13,700). Library The library has been completed and was dedicated on July 4, 1990, with Senator Mark Hatfield as keynote speaker. On the same day the library was officially named the Marilyn Potts Guin Library. Under the guidance of Janet Webster, the library has been steadily growing in its information retrieval capabilities with the aid of the new fiber optic Ethernet system. Students here can now search on-line card catalogs from a number of different states' libraries. COMES The Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station has completed hiring for the positions currently available. One position at the Astoria Lab has been frozen because of Measure 5 and we hope it will be restored this coming year. The COMES program is a significant program and has been receiving ever-increasing interest from the marine resource industries. Gil Sylvia has directed a marketing study for Pacific whiting. His efforts have also been instrumental in helping assess the shorebased processing plant as opposed to at-sea processing vessels. This should bring HMSC Annual Report 4 June 30, 1991 additional jobs and value-added products which would greatly enhance the Oregon economy. Dr. Haejung An recently completed a post-doctorate program at the University of Florida. Dr. An will be joining Michael Morrissey at the Astoria Lab, working in the area of seafood quality. Efforts are being made to rebuild that facility with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A Seafood Consumer Education Center is being planned adjacent to the laboratory. This past year a considerable effort has been made to repair the old facility, including painting the interior and exterior and repairing the large freezers. The purchase of new state-ofthe-art equipment was necessary to modernize the facility. Whiskey Creek/Netarts Hatchery Whiskey Creek is still under lease to the Tillamook Anglers. This year they have rebuilt the raceways and built a fenced-in, roofed area to protect the raceways from predators. They are seeking funding and support for increasing visitor areas at the facility. Development Officer The HMSC now has its own development officer, Thomas Chandler. Tom comes to us from Toshiba America in southern California. He began his job on May 1, 1991. We will be developing specific funding priorities with the OSU Foundation Office PERSONNEL CHANGES HMSC . Janet Webster has been selected as the new librarian at the Marilyn Potts Guin Library. Susan Pilling, formerly with Catalina Island Marine Station, is the new marine educator to replace Kathleen Heide. Jonathan Mee and Patrick Richardson have become the senior and junior aquarists, as the former graduate student aquarists (Bruce Koike and Michelle Moore) have completed their degrees. Thomas Chandler has been hired as the Center's first Director of Development, coming on board May 1. Dennis Glanzman has completed his sabbatical, working in George Mpitsos' lab and has returned to Arizona State University. Janet Leonard, University of Oklahoma, is also working in Mpitsos' lab on her sabbatical. COMES Haejung An is the new seafood quality researcher at the Astoria Seafood Lab. She comes to us from the University of Florida. HMSC Annual Report 5 June 30, 1991 COPE Gabriel Tucker completed his Ph.D. in Forestry at Cornell University and has replaced Tom McMahon as the Adaptive COPE coordinator at the Center. Pei-Fen Lee (University of Michigan) is working as a research assistant with Andy Hansen. ErA This year is marked by the retirement of two long-time EPA employees, Eleanor MacDonald (35 years) and Denis Body (30 years). A number of workers have been hired through TEAM Services to operate the new EPA facility. ODFW Darrell Demory retired this year after 31 years with the Department. Patty Farthing has moved on to The Da lles as a STEP biologist and Bill Hastie, Aquatic Education Program Leader, has moved his office down from Portland to Newport. NOAA Haru Matsumoto is a new research associate from the University of Hawaii. His areas of concentration are image processing and underwater acoustics. Andra Bobbit (Scripps) and Brian Wichner (OSU) are replacing Susan Hanneman and Maria Restrepo who have moved on to new areas and new degrees. NMFS Susan Sogard (Rutgers) is the newest post-doctorate for Bori 011a. Alex Haro has finished his post-doc and moved on to the Northeast Anadromous Fish Research Lab in Massachusetts. Clifford Ryer has been hired as a biologist with NMFS and is no longer working as a post-doc, although he will remain with the Fish Behavior program here.
