 Posting: Communications Intern Job Title: Communications Intern FLSA Status: Non-­‐ Exempt Grade: 1 Type of Position: Part Time, Regular Department: Office of the President Reporting to This Position: N/A Reports To: Communications Manager Location: Washington DC JOB SUMMARY The Police Foundation is national non-­‐profit bipartisan organization that consistent with its commitment to improve policing, and has been on the cutting edge of police innovation for over 40 years. The Police Foundation’s work is informed by available evidence, to increase public safety and strengthen communities. The professional staff at the Police Foundation works closely with law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, to develop research, comprehensive reports, policy briefs, model policies, and innovative programs that will continue to support the work of law enforcement (police & sheriffs) personnel. The Police Foundation conducts innovative research and provides on-­‐the-­‐ground technical assistance and to police, sheriff’s as well as engaging practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, mental health, housing, etc.), local, state and federal jurisdictions as it relates to police research, policy and practice. Communications Interns will work on a variety of Police Foundation projects, to provide administrative and editorial support to the communications team, with an emphasis on web and online communications. This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands-­‐on experience in a variety of web-­‐based technologies as well as exposure to PR, marketing, and media relations, and publications processes. Internships can be 3,6, or 12 months, depending on the candidates’ school schedule. The Police Foundation offers two internship experiences: paid and unpaid internships. Unpaid internships are offered to students, generally, where a college or university exercises oversight over the internship program and provides educational credit for the hours spent on site during their internship experience. Paid interns receive $10.10 for the duration of their on-­‐site internship engagement. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES § Draft, maintain, and organize web content; § Draft media releases § Support press events, assemble media kits, etc; § Produce and edit e-­‐mail campaigns, blog posts, and digital content; § Analyze online engagement and web traffic; § Assist with strategy to drive traffic to the Police Foundation’s website and online products; The Police Foundation is Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Employer Page 1 of 3 §

Monitor traditional and social media; Answer phones and limited copying and or filing. Copying or filing Attend panel discussions, conferences, symposia, and other meetings. SKILLS & ABILITIES § Personally committed to advancing the Police Foundation values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of a range of criminal justice issues and their implications; § Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and an analytical mind; § Manage multiple projects simultaneously; § Excellent verbal and written communication skills; § Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills who will work with a range of staff, including data-­‐driven researchers; § Demonstrated experience in MS Office; § Strong project management skills and attention to detail; § Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS § Applicants must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent from a non-­‐U.S. institution. Furthermore, applicants must be current students, recent graduates (within one calendar year), and/or have been accepted to enter an advanced degree program (within the next year). Non-­‐degree seeking students are ineligible. Most interns are at least seniors in the undergraduate level, though strongly qualified juniors (at the time of application) will be considered. § Graduate students are also eligible to apply §
